The Norwegian royal family has long stood for Scandinavian calm, elegance, and exemplary conduct. However, in the summer of 2025, a serious criminal case shook the nation and Europe.
Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son from Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s first marriage, is facing 32 charges. These include four counts of sexual assault, abuse, harassment, and secretly recording videos – according to multiple international sources including Vanity Fair and People.
The Weight of the Charges: Legal and Moral Issues Alike
The accusations claim that Høiby committed sexual offenses over several years, between 2018 and 2024, including one allegedly after a previous arrest.
Prosecutors say he secretly filmed a woman’s intimate body parts while she was asleep, without her consent. Victims may include former partners and acquaintances.
Norwegian prosecutor Sturla Henriksbø stated: “The most serious charges could lead to up to 10 years in prison if the court finds the defendant guilty.”
It also emerged that Høiby faced smaller legal proceedings before, but the scale and details of these new charges surpass all previous cases. Authorities believe the number of victims could grow, as new reports have come in since the case became public.
The Defense’s Position: Partial Admission Expected
Høiby’s lawyer, Petar Sekulic, acknowledged his client might admit to some lesser charges but denies the most serious ones. “He does not agree with the allegations of sexual assault and domestic violence,” Reuters reports.
The defense also stresses that Marius is not an official royal figure and does not enjoy special privileges. However, the media often portrays him as a royal “heir,” which they believe could influence public opinion.
From Tabloid Spotlight to Courtroom Trial
In his youth, Marius Borg Høiby frequently appeared on the covers of Norwegian tabloids with former model girlfriends, his Instagram activity, and journalistic attempts. Though never officially titled a prince, he often accompanied his mother at public events.
Due to the current charges, he has been arrested three times in 2024 – in August, September, and November – and has been under continuous police surveillance since.
What Does the Royal Family Say?
Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon, Marius’s stepfather, spoke publicly about the case for the first time on August 19. According to NRK, Norway’s public broadcaster, he said: “What happens is the court’s responsibility. It is a challenge and difficulty for everyone involved.”
The royal palace also issued an official statement affirming full support for the justice system’s work, emphasizing that no special treatment will be allowed.
Trial Set to Begin in January 2026
The trial is expected to start in January 2026 and is forecast to last at least six weeks. It could become one of Norway’s most complex criminal cases involving private offenses.
Experts say this case might mark a milestone in Norwegian criminal law, especially regarding sexual offenses and abuses involving technology. It has also sparked a serious public debate about prevention and victim protection.
This Case Holds a Mirror to Society
This case goes far beyond one family or its public figures. Sexual assault, abuse, and abuse of power are issues that affect every society, regardless of social or political status. That’s why it’s essential for justice to be impartial and grounded in the rule of law.
This story isn’t just a scandal around a royal family—it’s a chance to reflect on the values we hold dear, how we listen to victims, and the responsibility we carry in public conversations about such cases.
