Our daughter went abroad for six months to study, and her boyfriend—whom I once thought was a useless, shady guy—came over every week to "play" with our youngest son. (Yes, we had a surprise baby in our forties.) One day, I asked him what his real reason was for visiting so often. He said our daughter was worried that by the time she returned, her little brother wouldn’t remember her, so he promised to come every week and show him her photos. Then he pulled out a bunch of pictures of her from his pocket and showed them to the boy during playtime. I thought I’d cry right there.

My husband played soccer, and so did my son. Every girlfriend was a soccer fan. Once, I had to drive with the current girlfriend to Lake Balaton alone. At first, the conversation was awkward, but when we found out she hated soccer too, we instantly became friends.

I bought a new car radio but had trouble installing it because of the wiring. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get it done. My daughter’s long-haired, hippie boyfriend—who I never thought could even turn on a coffee maker—offered to help. He spent half a day on it but fixed it perfectly. He even repaired the dashboard wiring I had completely messed up! After that, I loved him like he was my own son.

Since my stroke, my hand doesn’t move well, and shaving has been a struggle. I never asked for help because I didn’t want to be a burden. One day, my son’s loud, outspoken girlfriend accidentally walked in on me in the bathroom and immediately understood the situation. She took the razor from my hand and shaved me perfectly in two minutes. Before I could thank her, she winked and was gone. She never told anyone, but from then on, she shaved me several times—it was our little secret.

My son never made a big deal out of his birthday, and we weren’t sure how he’d react to the surprise party his new girlfriend planned. She was energetic and a bit overenthusiastic, inviting a bunch of people. I wasn’t sure my son would like all the fuss. When he walked in and twenty of us jumped out shouting, "Surprise!" tears welled up in his eyes. He said it was the best birthday of his life and didn’t even know he had so many friends. From that moment, I liked the girl.

Our old, wild Rottweiler (Benőke) barked at every stranger and wanted to tear them apart—he was fiercely protective of the family. Many tried to win him over with bacon or meat on their hands before visits or with treats, but the kindness only made Benőke more aggressive. However, he immediately accepted my daughter’s new boyfriend, which we still don’t understand. I figured if Benőke approved, so would I.

Before the mobile era, suitors would just call saying, "Hi, this is Peti, is Barbi there?" But my daughter’s future husband always asked both me and my husband how we were doing. That sweet gesture instantly won us over.

They showed up early morning with my daughter, and the guy had a bruised face. It turned out a drunk jerk grabbed my daughter’s backside, and her boyfriend fought him and his friends. In the end, he left four people lying on the ground, and even the police nodded in approval.
