In 2007, the Svillcic family adopted Khan, a Doberman, from a shelter. Just days later, Khan was playing in their yard in Atherton, Australia, with their 17-month-old daughter, Charlotte, while mom watched nearby. Suddenly, Catherine Svillcic noticed the dog growling and baring his teeth at the child. Then, in a flash, Khan grabbed Charlotte by her diaper and tossed her behind him.

Rushing to her daughter, Catherine checked that Charlotte was unharmed. Only then did she realize the toddler had been playing near a mulga snake—one of Australia’s deadliest venomous snakes. Khan’s quick action saved Charlotte’s life, but the brave dog was bitten. Thanks to prompt medical care, Khan made a full recovery, and the family remains forever grateful to their heroic guardian.

One morning, Megan Howard was babysitting her roommate Samantha Kuusk’s two-year-old daughter, Hannah, while Samantha attended university classes. Megan made Hannah’s favorite breakfast and set it on the counter to cool. Watching the toddler absorbed in a morning cartoon on the couch, Megan thought it was a good moment to quickly use the bathroom. Moments later, she heard a loud commotion from the room.

Megan’s parrot, Willie, was flapping his wings loudly and repeatedly shouting “Mama!” and “Baby!”—an unusual combination he had never called out together before. Alarmed by the noise, Megan rushed back to find Hannah had climbed onto a chair to reach the counter and had choked on a bite of food.

The toddler was silently struggling for air, her face turning blue. Megan immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the food and calming Hannah. The parrot instantly quieted down. Later, when Hannah’s mother learned what happened, she was full of gratitude for Megan—but Megan insists the real hero was Willie, who was even awarded the Red Cross Medal for his brave act.

Kerry, the Brave Horse

While some pets show loyalty and courage, others—well, not so much. Cows, for example, are surprisingly dangerous, causing more human deaths annually than sharks. Anyone who’s seen one up close knows the power behind such an animal when it charges. Scottish farmer Fiona Boyd learned this firsthand when a protective cow attacked her while she was working near her animals. The cow pushed Fiona against a post multiple times, knocked her down, and pinned her under its full weight.

Fiona might not have survived if her nearby horse, Kerry, hadn’t heard her cries for help and rushed over immediately. Standing on his hind legs, Kerry kicked the attacking cow several times, buying Fiona enough time to roll under an electric fence to safety and call for help. Thanks to Kerry’s brave intervention, Fiona escaped with only minor injuries from what could have been a much worse ordeal.
