Some places don’t just tick off a box on our bucket list—they shift something inside us. The Dachstein Glacier was exactly that for me. Not only because it’s breathtakingly beautiful, but because as someone who fears heights, it challenged me in ways I never thought I’d face. Yet there I was in the summer of 2025, in Austria, at the glacier—knees shaking but heart wide open.
An Old Fear That Held Me Back for So Long
I’ve always loved traveling and hiking. Since I was a kid, nature, mountains, and exploring new places have drawn me in. But early on, I discovered I have a fear of heights. This “invisible” fear often made hikes harder and sometimes even stole my enthusiasm. High places, viewpoints, steep paths—I often chose to skip them rather than face the feeling.
"Just Because" – When Fear No Longer Calls the Shots
Over the years, something inside me slowly shifted. More and more, I found myself saying: just because. Not because I wasn’t scared, but precisely because I was. I refused to let my fears decide what I could experience and what I couldn’t.
The Dachstein Glacier was the perfect test: high-altitude trails, a glass observation deck, vast horizons—and even bolder challenges. I stood on the famous “stairway to nowhere,” a staircase literally hanging over the abyss. I crossed the suspension bridge leading to the glacier’s ice palace. Both thrilling and scary, but an incredible feeling to know I could do it.
Unforgettable Views – Hallstatt and Kaprun
But the 3-day trip wasn’t just about the glacier. In Hallstatt, we visited a stunning viewpoint overlooking the town and lake—high enough to challenge my fear of heights again. Still, I climbed up, paused, and soaked in the breathtaking panorama.
On the same trip, we explored the high mountain reservoirs in Kaprun with more confidence. The massive dams, towering peaks, and the quiet yet grand beauty of the reservoirs gave me a feeling that’s hard to put into words. It reinforced that overcoming fear and discovering new perspectives go hand in hand.
What the Dachstein Glacier Taught Me
Up there, in the realm of snow and ice, I truly realized how worth it it is to fight for a meaningful goal. The view was almost beyond words: endless white, sharp peaks, silence, and purity.
While my fear was still with me, it no longer ruled the moment. This place reminded me that our limits are often inside us, and that we can expand them when what’s waiting on the other side truly matters.
Birthday Above the Mountains
What made the experience even more special was that I was there on my birthday. This was my second year asking for an experience instead of a physical gift—and now I’m sure it’s a tradition I’ll keep. Memories don’t gather dust on a shelf; you can revisit them anytime you need a boost.
Takeaway for Everyday Life
These hikes don’t just recharge me—they stay with me. On tougher days, I just remember: I did it. I climbed up. I was there. The Dachstein Glacier, the famous “stairway to nowhere,” the suspension bridge, Hallstatt’s viewpoint, and the Kaprun reservoirs have become not just beautiful destinations but personal milestones.
A reminder that if we have a dream, a place we long for, or a meaningful goal, it’s worth trying again and again—even when we’re scared. In fact, maybe especially then.
