When Kids Hear These Three Phrases, They Feel Safe – Science Confirms It — Family
In this article

As parents, we all want our children to feel happy and secure. Many studies have explored what kind of environment and communication help build a child’s sense of safety. A new fascinating study from the University of Michigan reveals that just three simple phrases can make a big difference. Researchers observed children expressing emotions while their parents used different words during interactions.

The study analyzed the communication between about 150 children and their parents in a lab setting. Researchers wanted to see how children respond to certain phrases and how these words affect their emotional state. The results showed that children’s sense of security increased significantly when parents regularly used the phrases “I’m here,” “I love you,” and “You can count on me.”

1. “I Love You”

A stable environment is key to a child’s emotional and psychological growth. Psychologists say children thrive best when they consistently feel the support and love from their parents. Hearing “I love you” calms children, helping them focus better on their surroundings and learning.

2. “I’m Here”

Using “I’m here” tells a child that their parents are present, attentive, and ready to support them. This message is especially powerful in new or stressful situations, as a parent’s presence provides comfort and safety.

3. “You Can Count on Me”

When a parent says “You can count on me,” it sends a message of trust and closeness. The child feels their parent believes in their abilities, boosting their confidence. This reassurance is especially important when facing new challenges.

How to Bring These Phrases Into Your Daily Life

Adding these simple phrases to your daily conversations doesn’t take much effort. Start by making it a goal to say “I love you,” “I’m here,” and “You can count on me” every day. These small steps can have a huge impact on your child’s emotional well-being and growth.

These simple yet powerful words create emotional foundations that inspire and comfort children. Of course, other expressions like empathy and understanding also matter, but these three stand out for their strong effect.

The study clearly shows that while words alone aren’t everything, the right communication paired with love can deeply boost a child’s sense of security. When we consciously use these phrases regularly, our children feel safe—a vital foundation for a happy, balanced life.
