Bodies

Every minute, 170,000 people are having sex worldwide. That counts only those with a live partner, while an additional 250,000 people are watching porn at the same time. It’s striking that more people watch adult films than actually make love.

Beginnings and Endings

With Earth’s population at 8.2 billion and still growing, it’s no surprise that more people are born than die. To be exact, 250 babies take their first breath every minute, while 121 people take their last. (A sad fact: half of those babies are born into deep poverty.)

Interesting Facts

Every minute, 10 people get bitten by snakes and 116 couples say "I do". About 144 people move to a new home, and 400 sign up on Facebook. Globally, we make 48 million phone calls and 652 computers get hacked every minute.

Amounts

Amazon currently earns about $1.8 million in profit every minute, with founder Jeff Bezos pocketing nearly $38,000 net of that—pretty impressive for just 60 seconds. To put it in perspective, that’s $2.27 million per hour and $595 million per week. For most people, these numbers are mind-blowing, especially since the average American earns only 44 cents per minute. (Elon Musk “only” gets $300,000 richer every minute.)

Unsustainability

Every minute, we use 2 million plastic bags and dump 63,000 tons of waste into the oceans, including 21 tons of plastic. Around 2,470 tons of food end up in the trash every minute, and 300,000 animals lose their lives for human consumption, with 180,000 of them slaughtered in abattoirs.

Nature

Every minute, 5 earthquakes stronger than magnitude 2 shake the Earth, 2,700 lightning strikes hit, and 150 million tons of rain fall worldwide. 27 million new stars are born in the universe, 1,800 die, and the cosmos expands by 4,452 kilometers (2,766.4 miles) every minute.

The Body

In just one minute, 40,000 skin cells shed from your body. Your heart beats about 75 times, adding up to 500 billion heartbeats worldwide every minute. Humanity drinks 2.5 million liters of water per minute and blinks about 15 times per person. Blood circulates through your body three times every minute. Around 45 thoughts cross your mind each minute, with 3 of them being negative.

Commerce

McDonald’s sells 450 burgers worldwide every minute. About half a million people sip their beer, and 1.3 million enjoy a Coca-Cola.

Deaths

Every minute, just over two people die in road accidents. Half a woman—that is, one every two minutes—dies in childbirth. Malaria and heart disease claim one life each minute, while diabetes takes six. On average worldwide, one person becomes a homicide victim every minute, someone commits suicide every minute, and 18 people die of hunger.

Swearing

In the United States alone, 28 million swear words are spoken every minute, despite their vocabulary being quite limited compared to Hungarian. The FBI reports that at least one person is assaulted every minute in the US, which might be linked to all that swearing.
