Airport security is one of those moments that can turn a great trip into a frantic scramble — and usually over something completely avoidable. The good news? A few small habits before you even reach the checkpoint can make the whole process faster, calmer, and far less frustrating. Here's what seasoned travelers always do.

Pack your liquids the right way

This is still one of the most common reasons passengers get held up at security. Every liquid you carry must be in a container of 100ml or less, and all containers must fit inside a single, transparent, resealable bag. That bag needs to come out separately for screening.

The trick is to sort this out at home, not at the checkpoint. When you arrive prepared, you move through faster — and so does everyone behind you.

Keep your boarding pass within reach

Your boarding pass isn't just needed at the gate — you'll need it at the security checkpoint too. Yet it's surprisingly easy to bury it deep in your bag right when you need it most.

Put it somewhere immediately accessible: a jacket pocket, a small outer bag pocket, or pulled up on your phone screen before you join the queue. It's a tiny thing that saves a genuinely awkward moment.

Take off your jewellery before you get in line

Metal detectors are sensitive, and rings, bracelets, necklaces, and chunky accessories will almost always trigger them. Getting flagged means stepping aside, waiting for a manual check, and holding up the queue — none of which you want.

The simple fix: take off any larger metal pieces before you reach the scanner and tuck them safely into your carry-on. It takes thirty seconds and saves you several minutes of unnecessary stress.

Put your electronics at the top of your bag

Laptops, tablets, and larger cameras typically need to be removed from your bag and placed in a separate tray for X-ray screening. If they're buried under clothes, cables, and everything else you packed, finding them quickly becomes a real problem.

Before you leave for the airport, make sure your devices are in the most accessible part of your bag — ideally the top layer or a dedicated sleeve. You'll be in and out of the tray area in moments rather than minutes.

These small preparations don't just save time — they significantly lower your stress levels before you've even boarded the plane.

None of these steps take more than a few extra minutes at home, but they can completely change the tone of your departure. A smooth security experience means you arrive at your gate relaxed, with time to spare. Safe travels!
