The Herbal Garden of Tihany Abbey

Source: errearra.org

The herbal garden of Tihany Abbey is located on the shore of the Inner Lake, within the abbey’s estate. Of the seven-hectare estate, a quarter is dedicated to lavender fields, while the rest hosts a variety of herbs arranged in neat beds and display plots. Informative signs in the garden’s center share the stories and uses of the plants, making it easy for visitors to explore the dozens of species.

The garden’s creation began in 2017 when Benedictine novices and alumni from Győr planted the first herbs. Since then, nearly twenty types of medicinal plants have been added.

Common varieties include sage, lemon balm, hyssop, mint, thyme, St. John’s wort, and white wormwood. This year, chamomile and calendula joined the garden to enrich the selection even more.

Guided tours are regularly offered for visitors. The walk starts at the abbey’s visitor center with a short film, then groups stroll through the former estate buildings to the garden. Head gardener Boldizsár Tóth introduces the plants and shares how Tihany’s history connects with its herbal traditions. During Lavender Weeks, you can even pick your own lavender bouquet and snap some photos.

The garden’s harvest is turned into various abbey products. Father Gellért blends herbal teas from the dried plants, and lavender and lemon balm syrups, scented sachets, essential oils, and even a unique wheat beer are made. In 2022, they harvested about 7.5 tons of lavender, distilling 350 kilograms of petals into 2.5–3 liters of essential oil.
