Still, over time I discovered little things that can turn an empty or cramped apartment into a cozy home without spending a dime. These aren’t luxury items or fancy decor tricks, but simple everyday touches that helped me feel better in my own space — no matter where it was.
Plants — a green oasis from just one stem
I’m not exactly a green thumb, but I’ve always loved plants. Over time, my collection grew to include a few trendier, pricier ones. Still, my favorite has been a trailing plant that moved with me from place to place, growing more stems along the way.
I think I originally bought it on sale at a wholesale store. Since this plant grows fast, I could pinch off new stems almost every week — no planting needed. I’d just fill an empty bottle with water, place the cut stem inside, and set it on a windowsill, bookshelf, or even a dark corner to bring life to any part of the room.
Trailing plants don’t need much light and can thrive almost anywhere, turning any apartment into a lively green space. Even the dullest, dimly lit rentals can feel like a cozy jungle with just a few of these around.
Photos — memories that bring you home
A blank wall quickly feels welcoming with a few printed photos. No fancy frames or gallery walls needed — just some string, clips, or even a bit of tape.
Photos of friends, family, and happy moments helped me when I was alone in a new city or apartment. They reminded me who I am, where I come from, and that I’m never truly alone.
Colors — walls that embrace you
After a while, I realized that if I planned to stay somewhere longer, it was worth repainting the room — even if I had to repaint it back before moving out. Warm yellows, calming greens, or soft pastel blues can work wonders — not just for the space, but for your mood too.
Paint can be affordable, especially when I grabbed leftover cans from Facebook groups. In a small rental, sometimes just painting one wall was enough. Colors have a powerful effect on how we feel, so if you can change a gloomy room, it’s totally worth it.
Cozy nook — a spot that’s just mine
I didn’t always have a couch or a separate workspace, but I always carved out a corner that was just mine. A chair by the window, a soft pillow on the floor, or a corner of my bed turned into a comfy seat with a throw and cushions during the day.
This was my go-to spot to unwind with tea, a book, or music at the end of the day — a place that gave me a sense of safety. I always looked for this kind of "nook" in every home, and I still believe that while it’s important how a place looks and feels when you walk in, if there’s no spot where you truly want to relax and feel completely comfortable, it won’t ever feel like home.
Storage — because what you don’t see matters too
What we see in a home matters, but so does what we don’t see. Vacuum cleaners, plastic bins, and cleaning tools — if they’re out in the open, the whole space feels messy and temporary.
That’s why I always looked for hidden storage spots — under the bed, behind the wardrobe, tucked behind a curtain, or hidden in a loft. Just a few of these "invisible" storage tricks can make a big difference and help you enjoy your space more. Don’t believe me? Try putting away just one thing in your kitchen or living room that you don’t love seeing — you’ll notice the difference.
A home isn’t about perfection. For me, “home” meant making the most of what I had, again and again. A plant, a photo, a corner where I felt good — these shape the space where we can truly be ourselves. Because home isn’t four walls, it’s what we bring inside. From within, not from a store shelf.
