Even though June and summer are knocking on our door, you are still not too late with some vegetables to plant them in your garden – especially if late summer or autumn harvest is the goal! Of course, most flower, plant, fruit, and vegetable seeds and seedlings are usually planted in early spring, but there are some delicious vegetables for which you are still well in time!
The majority of vegetables sown from seed in June mature by late summer and autumn, but it’s also good to think about the upcoming period in your vegetable patch, right? And if your favorite vegetables receive enough sunlight, abundant rainfall or watering, and are planted in well-draining soil, success is guaranteed! We show you the delicacies you can still confidently plant in June!
1. Tomato
Of course, tomato seeds should have been planted long ago, but if you choose the seedling version of this delicious vegetable, you are not late for anything! Pick the seedling you like (fortunately, you can choose from many varieties and sizes), and you can plant it right away in your raised bed at home. Fertilize regularly, make sure to water it consistently, and when it grows very tall, don’t forget to stake it.
2. Arugula
You still have time in June to plant delicious arugula. It’s perfect for beds and the garden, but also does well on a kitchen windowsill. Provide it with adequate sunlight, and when it matures, be sure to harvest it because arugula left on the plant too long can become bitter. Harvest weekly or biweekly.
3. Parsley
Although March and April are the ideal times to plant parsley, it grows well in the summer thanks to the warm sun, so you can confidently plant it in June as well. Good news is it also thrives in shady spots, making it ideal for beds that don’t get full sun all day.
4. Carrot
Carrot varieties with a short growing season can easily be planted in early summer, as you can harvest them in summer and early autumn and enjoy fresh, tender shoots throughout the season. Since carrot roots grow deep and like to spread, it’s important to loosen the soil before planting. Water regularly and add fertilizer to the soil; this helps growth and ensures nice, healthy carrots develop.
5. Bean
Beans are an ideal vegetable because they mature quickly, yield abundantly, and like warm, consistently moist soil where they can enjoy at least 8 hours of sunlight. Since these conditions are fully met in every garden in June, you can confidently count on beans in your garden and beds. Among legumes, you can also experiment with peas as a second sowing, but be careful never to plant them where you have previously grown this vegetable.
6. Summer squash
As its name suggests, summer squash is suitable for planting in June because it is a fairly short-maturing vegetable, requiring only 60-70 days until harvest. Summer squash prefers warm and sunny spots where you need to water regularly so it can grow in your garden until the end of summer and be harvested at the end of the season and early autumn.
7. Pepper
You are not late at all if you want to harvest peppers in your small garden. Feel free to count on peppers outside as well! Their ripening time is 65 to 120 days, so you can enjoy this vitamin C-rich homegrown wonder on your plate as early as the end of July. Plant peppers in well-draining soil. The optimal temperature for growth is 25 degrees Celsius. Make sure to regularly remove weeds around them, as many weeds tend to suck up important and necessary nutrients from the peppers and hinder their growth.
