Beat the Heat: 5+1 Stunning Free Beaches Near Budapest

Easily reached by train from Nyugati Station, Nagymaros is just a short walk from the station through this charming town. It’s the perfect transition from city rush to the relaxed vibe of one of the Danube Bend’s most beautiful spots. It’s a bit of a walk from the train or bus stop, but public transport still makes it an easy visit. The pebble beach deepens quickly, but the playground and snack bar make it a fun spot for families. Opened in 2017, this relatively new beach quickly became a favorite not only for locals but also for many visitors from Budapest.

Szentendre locals have likely been dipping in the Danube for ages, but Postás Beach is the city’s first official free beach where you can swim legally. It offers changing rooms, showers, and drinking fountains, plus a playground, soccer field, and tennis courts to keep everyone entertained beyond the water. The 300-meter (980 ft) sandy beach is mostly sunny, with limited shade, and the water deepens quickly. The beach thrived in the ’60s and ’70s, declined for a while, and was reopened in 2016 for locals and visitors to enjoy.

This small but charming beach in Ráckeve is about two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the train station, so it’s mostly a local favorite. If you’re craving a peaceful, nature-filled swim, it’s worth the visit. The 200-meter (660 ft) shoreline is covered with grass and sand, leading into quickly deepening open water. Kids can enjoy the playground, while older visitors have access to soccer and volleyball courts. Open weekdays from 10 AM to 10 PM, and weekends from 9 AM to 10 PM, this little slice of paradise is perfect for a full day of relaxation.
