Cats Sense Rain: What They Can Predict

Cats are said to often sense earthquakes before even the most advanced equipment can. Observers have noticed that before an earthquake, cats become restless, actively searching for exits, and in extreme cases, they might even leap out of closed windows to escape danger.

Like with earthquakes, people have often relied on cats’ behavior to anticipate air raids. In these moments, cats flee in panic, alerting those around them to the approaching threat. Sometimes, planes preparing for bombing only appeared on radar after cats showed signs of distress.

Cats don’t just sense vibrations—they’re also excellent at detecting storms and approaching rain. It’s no surprise they’re among the most reliable natural weather forecasters. Folk wisdom says cats predict rain when they scratch their ears or hold their front paws near their ears for a while.

Cats are especially sensitive to changes in air pressure and can predict sudden weather shifts. They not only sense big pressure changes but their fur also becomes electrically charged. You’ll notice they get restless and rub themselves vigorously against furniture.

Experts can map water veins in our homes, but an even simpler way is to watch where cats like to hang out. These spots are ideal for cats but might not be the best places for us to spend a lot of time, like sleeping.

Folklore says cats don’t just predict weather or disasters—they can sense arguments too. It’s believed that if a cat stops outside a house and meows loudly and persistently, it signals tension inside and that a serious quarrel might soon happen.
