No matter the menu, Christmas appetizers always earn a special place on the table. These are the delicious bites I prepare year after year because our guests just adore them.
The Edible Wreath That Charms Everyone
One treat that keeps our relatives coming back is our so-called “edible wreath.” It’s the crown jewel of our appetizers—eye-catching, fragrant, and wonderfully light. I arrange fresh greens in a large, round platter like a real wreath. Lately, rosemary has been my favorite: it holds its shape beautifully, sets a festive mood, and its scent instantly recalls Christmas Eve. I also like to mix in some lamb’s lettuce because it keeps its form so well.
In the center, I place fresh, creamy hummus, and the greens are decorated with tiny, colorful bites: since ripe cocktail tomatoes are rare in winter, I usually reach for my own sun-dried tomatoes. I add colorful olives, capers, and finely diced spiced tofu—anything fresh, exciting, and perfect for nibbling!
Savory Bites That Make the Holiday
On the savory side, mini bruschettas and various dips have become family favorites over the years. I love toasting garlic-herb baguette slices at home, but fresh veggie sticks work just as well as a base. When fresh bakery bread isn’t on hand—which can happen during the holiday rush—I turn to grissini. They’re a staple for us: I keep several flavors at home, love how they look standing in a glass, and they’re perfect for scooping up thicker dips!
I keep the dips simple: a quick, zesty salsa, avocado cream, or a spiced lentil or bean spread always hits the spot. The magic usually comes from a special flavored oil or a pinch of a secret spice blend the guests don’t know about. And of course, everyone dipping as they please always makes the atmosphere more relaxed and fun.
Dates That Always Steal the Show
When it comes to sweets, dates are unbeatable in our house. I’m not talking about the usual dry ones, but soft, caramel-flavored premium varieties that can stand alone as desserts. Sukkari and Medjool are our top picks: their creamy, caramel-rich, and flavorful taste makes them a true festive treat.
A family favorite is stuffed dates: I carefully remove the pit and fill the space with a piece of marzipan—this bite disappears faster than I can make it. When I have time, I dip the combo in dark chocolate, as its slight bitterness balances the date’s sweetness beautifully. Sometimes I sprinkle crushed pistachios or walnuts on top for an extra crunch.
Speaking of Nuts!
I love piling them high on a big, beautiful platter: pecans, macadamia nuts, red-skinned walnuts, hazelnuts, and Brazil nuts together not only look stunning but somehow elevate the whole Christmas vibe. Many guests only encounter these nuts in such variety during the holidays, and it’s always fun to watch them curiously taste and guess the flavors.
Here’s a little trick that really makes these nuts shine: I make candied versions. A quick boil of equal parts cane sugar and water turns into a thick, glossy caramel coating. I toss the nuts in this syrup and sprinkle them with gingerbread spice mix. Once dried, they become crunchy, fragrant, and almost like little cookies—and they often disappear before even reaching the living room.
