Discover Europe’s Cleanest Lakes and Rivers for Swimming — Leisure
In this article

As nature awakens in spring, more of us crave outdoor adventures, fresh air, and sparkling watersides. Europe offers countless breathtaking lakes and rivers, many so clear they invite you to dive right in. According to a 2025 report, some countries truly shine when it comes to water purity.

The Travel + Leisure article shares that the latest report from the European Environment Agency ranks three countries at the top for Europe’s cleanest swimming lakes and rivers. These spots aren’t just beautiful—they’re exceptional in water quality, making them perfect for nature lovers seeking pristine swim destinations.

Three Countries Leading the Pack

The joint report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Commission shows that Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania share the top spot for Europe’s cleanest inland waters based on the 2024 bathing season data. Most sites studied earned the highest water quality ratings.

This annual study reviews water quality at European bathing sites. Alongside EU member states, Switzerland and Albania are also included. Experts test thousands of locations—beaches, rivers, lakes, and natural swimming spots.

They focus mainly on bacteriological data, especially the presence of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci bacteria. These microbes often enter natural waters through sewage or agricultural runoff, making them key indicators of water cleanliness.

EEA director Leena Ylä-Mononen emphasized in the report:

“Most of Europe’s bathing waters are safe and clean, thanks to European environmental regulations and regular monitoring.”

She also pointed out that climate change and overuse may pose new challenges in the future.

What Does “Clean Water” Really Mean?

It’s important to know that the European ranking mainly assesses hygienic water quality. This doesn’t always match what our eyes perceive as clear. A lake or beach might look cloudy due to natural sediments, algae, or storms, yet still be perfectly safe for swimming according to tests.

Visitor behavior also affects beach conditions: litter left behind or overcrowding can sometimes spoil the experience, even when water quality is excellent.

Coastal Beaches Still Take the Lead

Interestingly, the report finds that coastal bathing sites are generally even cleaner than inland lakes and rivers. Recently, Croatia and Cyprus also topped the list in this regard. About 89% of Europe’s coastal bathing waters earned an “excellent” rating, compared to 78% for inland waters.

Still, many mountain lakes, forest rivers, and hidden swimming spots are exceptionally clean. That’s why many travelers seek out these lesser-known natural gems, where water quality and scenic beauty combine for a truly special experience.

Lakes Hidden Among Mountains

Some countries in the report had relatively few inland waters tested, which partly explains their outstanding results.

In Bulgaria, for example, the Pchelina Reservoir and two other inland waters were checked, all receiving excellent ratings. Mountain lakes and rivers there are especially pure, often less affected by urban or industrial pollution.

Romania’s Ciuperca Lake also stood out with a top rating. The country’s mountainous and natural regions host many lakes and rivers with outstanding water quality.

Greece is best known for its coastal beaches, but inland it offers many beautiful lakes and rivers for nature lovers. Its mountainous areas feature numerous swimming spots with crystal-clear water and nearly untouched surroundings.

Austria and Finland Also Among the Best

Two other countries scored exceptionally well: Austria and Finland.

Austria had 95.8% of its inland bathing waters rated excellent, while Finland’s figure was 93.8%. These countries also tested many more sites: Austria checked 260 lakes and rivers, Finland 225.

Both countries are long celebrated for their pure lakes. Austria’s alpine lakes and Finland’s “land of a thousand lakes” inspire many travelers seeking pristine nature.

From a Hungarian Perspective: Plenty to Be Proud Of

While the report highlights other countries, Hungary also boasts beautiful and popular watersides. The Balaton, Lake Tisza, Lake Velence, and many stretches of the Danube and Tisza rivers prove that our country offers plenty of spots where waterside relaxation and nature come together for a special experience.

Water quality is continuously monitored in Hungary, and most designated natural swimming sites receive good or excellent ratings in European assessments.

Why Clean Water Matters

Clean lakes and rivers aren’t just vital for swimmers. These ecosystems provide habitats for countless plant and animal species and hold great value for tourism and local communities.

Europe’s improving water quality shows how environmental efforts can yield impressive long-term results. Yet experts stress the need to focus even more on sustainable water use and protecting natural habitats going forward.

One thing is clear: Europe is full of lakes and rivers with exceptionally clean water. If you’re planning a spring or summer trip, consider exploring these hidden crystal-clear waters—whether close to home or elsewhere on the continent.
