Gluten-free at Lake Balaton: 5 places where I've never once been let down — Lifestyle

For most people, stopping at a cosy restaurant or grabbing a bite at a lakeside snack bar is one of the simple pleasures of a Balaton holiday. When you're gluten and dairy intolerant, it's rarely that simple.

Dairy-free options are becoming easier to find, but gluten intolerance is a different matter entirely. It's not just about which ingredients go into a dish — it's about how everything is prepared. A single breadcrumb, a shared cooking surface, or flour drifting through the air during breading can be enough to trigger serious symptoms.

For me, a dietary mistake means severe stomach cramps and digestive problems that kick in almost immediately. One poorly chosen lunch can ruin not just a beach day, but an entire holiday. That's why I'm very deliberate about where I eat when I'm at Lake Balaton.

Over the years, I've found a handful of places I return to with complete confidence — restaurants, bistros and cafés where food-sensitive guests are genuinely taken care of, where I feel safe, and where the food is good enough to be worth the trip on its own.

Here are my five Balaton favourites.

1. Sanyika Halsütő, Balatonlelle – where the gluten-free menu goes far beyond the basics

I first discovered Sanyika Halsütő in Balatonlelle several years ago, and later had the chance to interview the owner, Sándor Szalai. I've been going back ever since, and every visit ends the same way — with a smile.

It's no coincidence that this place has been one of the most popular spots in town for years. The attentiveness here isn't just a marketing promise — it's something you actually feel.

Alongside the classic fish dishes, you can order a wide range of options in gluten-free versions — including breaded meat, breaded cheese, bolognese pasta, poppy seed pasta, tuna salad, bean goulash and even pancakes. Most dishes are also available dairy-free, and you can even request gluten-free dumplings (nokedli).

My personal go-to is the catfish stew with rice, though the hake with chips and the bean goulash are regulars on my order too.

While the kitchen also prepares non-gluten-free food, guests with intolerances are given special attention. I always mention my sensitivity in advance, and I've never had an unpleasant surprise here.

For a lakeside restaurant, the prices are genuinely reasonable and the portions are generous — both of which feel like a bonus when you're already relieved just to eat safely.

2. Oszi Bácsi Keszegsütödéje, Szigliget – the place that made me fall in love with fish

I'll be honest — I was never much of a fish eater. But if you want to understand why so many people rave about freshwater fish at Lake Balaton, Oszi Bácsi Keszegsütödéje in Szigliget is the place to go.

The restaurant sits right on the Szigliget beach, but there are also seats facing the street, so you can enjoy lunch here without a beach pass.

I've asked about gluten-free options on multiple visits, and as of 2026, all fish dishes are prepared gluten-free. I always flag my intolerance when I arrive, which means I can also request chips fried in a separate, dedicated oil. The pickled cucumbers are gluten-free too.

My favourite is the two-person catfish platter. It tastes incredible and looks spectacular enough to count as a proper dining experience in itself.

There's no hake on the menu, but I genuinely don't miss it. This is the kind of place that makes you want to branch out and try something new.

3. Tigris Reggeliző és Bisztró, Balatonfüred – gluten-free lángos at the lake? Yes, really

If I had to recommend just one spot at Lake Balaton that's open every day of the week and works equally well for breakfast, lunch or dinner, it would be Tigris Reggeliző és Bisztró in Balatonfüred.

Once you mention your gluten intolerance, a large part of the menu can be prepared gluten-free and kept separate from other dishes. For anyone spending several days at the lake, that kind of flexibility is genuinely invaluable.

The standout here is the gluten-free lángos — the beloved Hungarian fried dough — which you can even order with vegan cheese and plant-based sour cream. Gluten-free and dairy-free pancakes are also on the menu.

But it's not just beach food classics. There's a solid selection of fish dishes too, including salmon and tuna steaks served with sweet potato — a proper sit-down meal worth planning your day around.

4. Café Spirit, Siófok – a 100% gluten-free haven

Café Spirit in Siófok is entirely gluten-free, which means the moment you walk through the door, a weight lifts off your shoulders. No need to interrogate the staff, no need to worry about cross-contamination — you can simply sit down and enjoy.

It works beautifully for coffee, brunch, burgers, pizza and pastries alike. There's also a strong selection of gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free and vegan desserts.

The specialty coffees, iced matcha and seasonal treats make this a great stop even if you're just taking a short break from a lakeside walk. It's the kind of café that feels like a treat regardless of your dietary needs — and a rare luxury if you have them.

5. SENZA, Balatonfüred – when you need something good to take to the beach

Also in Balatonfüred, SENZA Gluten-Free Delights & Specialty Coffee is another fully gluten-free spot that's become a firm favourite of mine.

What makes it especially useful is that it's just as good for taking away as it is for sitting in. You can easily pick up something for the beach or a day trip without any stress.

Fresh baked goods, pastries and specialty coffees fill the counter, and the atmosphere feels like a proper artisan bakery — just without any of the gluten anxiety. It's a rare thing, and it never gets old.

You don't have to miss out on great food at Lake Balaton

Living with gluten and dairy intolerance can make spontaneous dining feel like something that belongs to other people. The anxiety of choosing the wrong restaurant, the fear of a reaction ruining your day — it's exhausting.

Fortunately, more and more places around Lake Balaton are genuinely stepping up for food-sensitive guests.

These five spots have been my reliable anchors for a long time now. Places where I don't just eat well — I eat without worry. And if you've ever experienced a dietary reaction in the middle of a holiday, you know that sometimes, that peace of mind is the greatest gift of all.
