The air fryer is the appliance most of us use daily and clean least thoroughly, mostly because the basket rinses so easily that it feels done. Then one evening your croissants come out smelling faintly of last Thursday's chicken thighs, and you realise the smell is not coming from the part you've been washing. It's coming from the ceiling of the machine, where fat has been quietly aerosolising onto the heating element for months.
The good news is that a proper clean takes about twenty minutes of mostly waiting, needs nothing you don't already have, and only has to happen once a month if you build in the two-minute version after cooking.
The after-dinner two minutes that prevent everything
Once the basket is empty, tip out any loose crumbs and give it a wash before it cools completely — warm non-stick releases grease with a soft sponge and washing-up liquid, cold non-stick needs soaking. Dry it properly rather than leaving it to drip, because trapped moisture under a basket is where the musty smell starts.
Then, with the machine unplugged and cooled, wipe the inside of the drawer cavity and the underside of the lid area with a damp cloth. That single wipe is what keeps you from ever having to do a serious degrease. Most people never touch this part, which is precisely why their kitchen fills with smoke the next time they cook something at a high temperature.
The monthly deep clean, step by step
Unplug the machine and let it cool fully. Remove the basket and the crisper plate and let them sit in hot water with a squeeze of washing-up liquid for fifteen minutes — soaking replaces scrubbing, and scrubbing is what wrecks non-stick coatings. For baked-on rings, make a thick paste of bicarbonate of soda and a little water, spread it on, leave it while you deal with the rest, then wipe away with a soft sponge or an old toothbrush for the corners and around the rivets.
Now the part everyone skips. Tip the whole unit gently onto its back or side so you can see up into the cavity: that coil and the metal plate around it is where the fat lives. With a damp cloth wrung out well — damp, not wet — wipe the plate and carefully around the coil. A toothbrush helps for the mesh. Never spray anything directly into the machine, never submerge the base, and don't use metal scourers or abrasive powders on any interior surface. Finish by wiping the exterior, the control panel and the handle, all of which collect the greasy fingerprints nobody notices until the light hits them.
The habits that keep the smell away
Airflow is everything in an air fryer, and it is also what carries odours. Don't cover the whole base with foil or a solid liner, because blocked airflow means grease circulating instead of draining. Perforated parchment liners cut down mess, but only put them in with food on top so they don't fly up into the element.
For strong-smelling cooks — fish, garlic, anything heavily spiced — run the empty, clean machine at a moderate heat for a few minutes with a small heatproof dish of water and a slice of lemon inside. The steam lifts residual odour better than any scented spray, and it doesn't leave a perfume behind that ends up on your toast. Finally, store the basket slightly ajar rather than pushed fully home, so air can move through it between uses.
Can you put the air fryer basket in the dishwasher?
Some are dishwasher-safe and some aren't, and the manual is the only reliable answer — a quick search for your model number will tell you if you've lost the booklet. Even where it's permitted, repeated dishwasher cycles tend to dull and eventually degrade non-stick coatings faster than hand washing, so a fifteen-minute soak in the sink is usually the kinder long-term choice.
Why does my air fryer still smell after I've cleaned it?
Nine times out of ten it's the heating element and the roof of the cavity, which don't come out and therefore never get washed with the basket; residual fat there re-heats and re-scents every single thing you cook. The other common culprits are a damp basket stored closed, or the small drip area at the back of the drawer where liquid collects unseen — check both, wipe with a barely damp cloth, and let everything air-dry fully before the next use.
