When spring comes, I feel a deep urge to refresh everything, and I can’t wait for our home to shed its heavier layers.

I’m a true summer soul, so when the cold months settle in during the second half of the year and I have to say goodbye to those cozy autumn days, life feels a bit tougher. Even though we try to break up the darker months with trips (just to catch some winter sun), those long, shadowed days often seem endless.

That’s why, when the first spring rays appear, I instantly get excited and fully tap into that wonderful, vibrant energy. I try to spend as much time outdoors as possible, but since most weekdays find me at my desk, it’s crucial that my home reflects the freshness I crave.

The Magic of an Outdoor Living Room

My spring buzz starts in one of my favorite spots: our terrace, which I’ve come to think of as a second living room. Facing east, it basks in sunlight from early morning until afternoon, making it the perfect spot for weekend coffee or quick recharges during breaks.

As soon as the windy days calm down, I bring out the plants that spent winter in the cellar, then cozy up the comfy rattan furniture with soft pillows and throws, and decorate the railings with colorful lanterns. Seasonally, I also make room for a bit of Easter decor, which later gives way to cheerful, vibrant trailing geraniums—setting the mood for the eagerly awaited summer.

The Play of Textiles Indoors

Indoors, my quickest and most effective refresh is swapping out textiles. Pillow covers, table runners, and bedding instantly change the room’s vibe. I love this trick because it lets the house wear the face of the current season, and since we only use these accessories for a few months each year, they stay in great shape—no need to spend a fortune every season.

This year, we took a bolder step: we replaced the entire curtain rod system and the curtains. Instead of heavy blackout curtains, we opted for decorative trims, which is not only budget-friendly but also lets us easily add new colors and styles to the rooms anytime in the future—also at a great price.

Bringing Life to Every Corner

Spring is unthinkable to me without flowers, so I always place fresh or cut blooms on the table. I especially love bulb flowers because they carry the magic of sustainability and cycles: after blooming, I simply plant them in the garden.

This little ritual has paid off over the years, and now every spring daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses greet me outside too. It’s heartwarming to see how last year’s indoor decorations have become garden treasures this year, and this cycle somehow soothes me. It’s like each planted bulb is a promise to myself: after the long winter, the sun will shine again next year.

Organizing as Emotional Detox

For me, spring refresh goes beyond decor—I love to "take back" my home from accumulated clutter. I’ve noticed that when unnecessary stuff disappears from sight, the whole space breathes easier—and so do I.

I’m not talking about a spring deep clean, but rather a mindful sorting that makes room for newness and lightness. From the end of winter, I methodically (but bit by bit) go through the whole house and even check the depths of the cellar. It feels great to let go of useless clutter and watch chaos turn back into neat, clean shelves.

When the last unnecessary box leaves the cellar and the scent of freshly washed curtains fills the room, I always realize: refreshing our home was really about me. This sometimes tiring, sometimes reflective process has helped me leave behind my winter blues once and for all this year.
