The EU Banned a Popular Gel Polish Ingredient Over Cancer Concerns — Family
In this article

When I first started using gel polish, I never really thought about what was inside that little bottle. For me, a manicure was all about pampering, beauty, and long-lasting shine.

Then, during the pandemic, I suddenly found myself without a nail technician, which led me to stop using gel polish altogether. Surprisingly, my nails—hidden away for years—became healthier and stronger than ever. At the same time, I kept coming across info about how harmful artificial additives can be, and how much we use daily—not just in beauty products. This pushed me to pay much closer attention to what I put on my skin.

Why Was TPO Banned?

Starting September 1, 2025, the European Union officially bans trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, known as TPO, in cosmetics. TPO is an ingredient that acts as a photoinitiator in gel polishes.

This means that when exposed to UV or LED light, it helps cure and harden the polish. That’s exactly what makes gel polish durable, shiny, and tough—just the way we love it.

The problem is, toxicology studies show that TPO is carcinogenic, mutagenic, and may harm reproductive health. Because of this, the EU classified it as a CMR substance and banned it from all cosmetic products—not just gel polishes.

Both New and Existing Stocks Are Now Banned

The ban doesn’t just stop manufacturers from producing TPO-containing products from now on. The regulation also requires that existing stocks be removed from the market. So, if you still see gel polish with TPO, it’s likely not legal in the EU. Salons, distributors, and manufacturers all need to check their inventory and discard any products that don’t meet the new rules. This impacts everyone—from home users to professionals.

What Does This Mean for You If You Use Gel Polish?

You might be worried by this news, but here’s the good part: gel polish as a technology isn’t banned—only the versions containing TPO. Manufacturers are already working on new formulas that are just as durable and shiny but use different photoinitiators.

If you regularly use gel polish or just like to get it done occasionally, keep a few things in mind.

First, always check the INCI list for ingredients: if you see TPO (or trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide), it’s time to skip that product. You can also use this method to check your current stash.

Also, choose brands that have publicly confirmed they’ve switched to TPO-free formulas. And remember, traditional nail polish is a solid alternative, usually containing far fewer chemicals.

How Many More Bans Could Come?

TPO isn’t the first ingredient to be banned, and it probably won’t be the last. EU cosmetic regulations keep tightening, with experts reviewing more substances that might harm our health over time. In recent years, several parabens, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and certain UV filters have already been taken off the market.

Sadly, there are likely many ingredients we use today without worry that could be labeled dangerous tomorrow. But remember, the market adapts to what consumers want—so ultimately, we decide what manufacturers can offer.

This new regulation is a reminder that being mindful and responsible about what you put on your skin and nails pays off. Paying attention now means you gain far more in the long run than just a long-lasting, shiny manicure.
