According to makeup artist Karol Rodriguez, this clumpy effect is most often not caused by the product itself, but by how you prepare (or fail to prepare) your facial skin. In a short but very informative Instagram video, he shared four simple yet brilliant tips on how to avoid your foundation clumping, and all advice is related to pre-makeup steps.

1. No smooth base without exfoliation

If your foundation doesn’t settle properly into your skin, it’s often due to dead skin cells, which create a miniature obstacle course. According to Rodriguez, if you don’t exfoliate regularly, the layer of dead cells literally prevents any makeup product from spreading nicely. Use a chemical exfoliant, or if you’re short on time in the morning, use a gentle acid exfoliating pad right before makeup. This helps smooth the skin surface without causing irritation.

2. Only use as much cream as your skin can absorb

You’ve probably felt like a shiny butter croissant after a 5-step skincare routine in the morning, right? Rodriguez says this can also be a problem if you don’t wait for serums and creams to absorb; makeup just slips on top. Then all layers mix, don’t adhere nicely to each other, and crumbling happens. Simple rule: if you have 10 minutes to do your makeup, don’t start with a 10-step routine. You’ll know you’ve waited enough if you touch your skin and nothing comes off on your finger.

3. Clean brush = better results

One of the most common mistakes many people make is not cleaning their brushes regularly. If your foundation brush still has yesterday’s makeup on it, don’t be surprised if the application turns out streaky or clumpy. Even worse is using the same tool for primer and then foundation, because different layers easily mix and cause clumping. Always use a clean brush or sponge, and preferably a separate tool for each product. This not only improves your makeup quality but your skin will thank you as well. Less irritation, fewer breakouts, and a much nicer finish.

4. Don’t swipe, just pat

The old habit of applying foundation as if painting a wall with a brush is time to forget. Rodriguez says scrubbing motions disrupt the balance you created with careful preparation.

"Simply tap it on. Don’t rub or drag, just let it rest on the skin."

Less friction means less clumping.

Foundation is much more of a team player than a solo star. If everything else is in place — exfoliation, proper preparation, clean brushes, and correct technique — it can do its job well. If you just slap it on your skin, don’t be surprised if it fights back. So next time you think the product isn’t working, look in the mirror because maybe you just need a little fine-tuning.
