When the cold months arrive, most people slow down and settle into cozy vibes, leaving behind the summer buzz. But for us, it’s the opposite: our travel enthusiasm really sparks in fall and winter!
Over the past few years, we’ve learned that memorable experiences aren’t just for peak season. In fact, the period from September to May has become our top pick: crowds are rare, it’s easier to find accommodations and affordable flights, and every destination shows its quieter, more intimate side.
Accordingly, we’ve timed our big, “real vacation” for the autumn break, but we also squeeze in shorter getaways throughout the year. Even a weekend escape to recharge and break free from daily routines can be surprisingly rewarding. There’s so much waiting to be discovered right here at home!
I keep two bucket lists: one for farther, international trips, and another filled with local favorites reachable within a few hours’ drive. The local list stays front and center—it helps me enjoy this season more intentionally. If the weather dampens my mood, a quick glance sparks fresh inspiration. This year, my list is packed with spots sure to brighten our cold months!
Felsőpetény Geode
I recently watched a video about the Felsőpetény Geode cave and knew we had to visit. Guided by a geologist, you explore this unique cave where the walls glow under UV light, covered in minerals and crystals. It’s one of Hungary’s most stunning geological wonders, and a magical experience for kids too. The geo-walk isn’t long but is incredibly fascinating—offering a peek into Earth’s hidden secrets while mixing learning with fun.

Túrajó Adventures
Túrajó’s themed hikes have become a beloved tradition for us. These organized mini-excursions for adults reveal our region from fresh, unexpected angles. Sometimes we dive into old mines, explore industrial heritage sites, or wander abandoned waterworks. We’ve even joined tram tours and toured the Hajmáskér barracks.
Each hike is rich and exciting, led by expert guides who create experiences we still talk about with joy years later.
Paddling on the Hévíz Stream
The warm spring waters of Lake Hévíz aren’t just for bathing: even in the cold months, you can paddle along the stream flowing from the lake—an unforgettable canoe trip! Water temperatures hover around 20–25°C (68–77°F), letting you glide through misty, almost otherworldly scenery while the surrounding nature shows its autumn and winter colors.
This promises to be a peaceful yet incredibly special family outing, but plan ahead since booking a guided tour is required.
Love and Art in One Place
Bory Castle isn’t just a castle—it’s a stone monument to love and teamwork. Jenő Bory and his wife, Ilona Komócsin, spent decades building it by hand, almost without plans. Its seven towers, thirty rooms, sculptures, mosaics, and stained glass each tell a story for future generations.
Open in winter too, the garden may be less green then, but the arcaded courtyards create a special atmosphere—just like the exhibitions. I’ve already downloaded the interactive map for kids, so this will definitely be a family favorite!
A Tropical Oasis Downtown
Recently opened on the Belgrád Quay, Papilonia Butterfly World is a tropical, humid space where hundreds of butterflies flutter around you. The temperature stays steady at 27–28°C (81–82°F), making it a refreshing escape during cold months. Most butterfly species come from the Amazon basin, Africa, and Asia, and visitors can even watch them emerge from their chrysalises. It’s a perfect family outing, letting us marvel at nature’s colorful wonders while breaking free from winter’s grayness.
Veszprém Castle Prison Visitor Center
The Veszprém Castle Prison Visitor Center is more than an exhibition: its permanent display, “The Person Behind Bars,” uses interactive elements to guide visitors through themes of discipline, justice, and human existence. The old prison’s corridors and cells shed new light on inmates’ fates and the social and historical sides of crime and punishment. This exhibition not only informs but invites reflection: what was considered a crime in different eras? How have judgment standards evolved? It’s a thought-provoking experience. We’re planning to visit as a couple during a themed program, which will make exploring the topic even more engaging.
Seasonal Theater Performances
Our kids regularly attend school-organized theater outings, and we love catching a show too. It feels great to dress up, enjoy dinner at a cozy restaurant, and then settle in for a quality performance. I only realize how much we need and miss these shared moments when we return home fully refreshed! After these nights, I always vow to make time for more—they don’t just entertain but spark new conversations, create shared memories, and somehow bring a festive vibe back into everyday life.
