Interior design is all about self-expression, while staging focuses on showcasing a home’s best features.

“Decor and interior design usually reflect the people living there, surrounded by things they love. And that’s exactly how it should be.”

- says Pat Evans, owner of Pat’s World Staging & Redesign.

She adds that staging aims to appeal to as many people as possible. The tidier and more neutral a home feels, the more likely someone will see their dream space in it.

That’s why many pros recommend clearing the kitchen counters so clutter doesn’t distract from the room’s features. Counter and cabinet size matters here, since all those pots, plates, and tools need a place. A crowded counter can feel messy, so a little rearranging goes a long way. Wondering how to make your kitchen look amazing?

Highlight Counter and Cabinet Space

Don’t hesitate to tuck away the dish rack. It usually takes up a lot of counter space and doesn’t look great, especially the plastic ones. It’s even more distracting when drying dishes are piled on it. The cabinet is a perfect spot, and you can grab it quickly when needed.

The same goes for knives. Storing them in a drawer is safer and keeps your small kitchen feeling less crowded, even though having them handy on the counter is convenient.

Short on Kitchen Space?

It’s even more important to avoid a cluttered look. Put away anything unnecessary—only keep what makes the space feel cozy and inviting. A basket of fresh fruit and a simple bouquet in a vase can create a lovely vibe. Still, be cautious with decorations in a small kitchen. Minimalism is your friend here.

So, What Should Stay on the Counter?

According to Evans, a soap dispenser, coffee maker, a few flowers, and tasteful decor pieces won’t hurt the overall look. Choose attractive items, even borrowing a few from another room if they fit well on the windowsill or counter. Just keep the style simple and harmonious.

The key is that when staging a kitchen, less really is more. So take the time to tidy up if you want to sell your home.
