4 Things You Should Never Keep in Your Bedroom, According to Feng Shui — Decor

Your bedroom is sacred — at least, that's what feng shui has always insisted. You spend roughly a third of your life in that room, and it's where your body and mind do their deepest repair work. So what's sitting around your bed while you sleep actually matters more than you might think.

A few surprisingly common objects can quietly disrupt the flow of energy in your bedroom, leading to restless nights, low-grade tension, and even friction in your closest relationships. Here are the four things feng shui says should go.

A mirror facing directly toward the bed

This is one of the most well-known rules in feng shui — and one of the most frequently broken. A mirror that faces the bed directly is considered a major sleep disruptor. According to the tradition, mirrors amplify and bounce energy around the room, keeping it in constant motion when you need it to be still.

On a purely practical level, many people report that waking in the middle of the night and catching a glimpse of their own reflection in a darkened room is genuinely startling — enough to pull them fully awake. If you love your mirror and don't want to move it, a simple fix is to drape a light cloth over it at night, or reposition it on a wall where it can't reflect the bed directly.

Work tools and a desk in the sleeping space

Laptops, stacks of paperwork, bills, chargers, notebooks — anything that signals work or obligation has no business being in your bedroom, according to feng shui. This space is meant for rest, intimacy, and restoration. Work items carry a very different energy: they silently remind you of deadlines, unfinished tasks, and stress, even when you're not consciously thinking about them.

If your living situation means working from home without a dedicated office, try to carve out a separate corner for your desk — ideally screened off with a room divider. At the very least, cover your desk and devices with a cloth before bed so they're out of your sightline when you lie down.

Your bedroom is not a storage unit and not an office. It's the one place where both your body and your mind need permission to fully stop.

Exercise equipment

The treadmill ends up in the bedroom because there's nowhere else to put it. The yoga mat lives there because it's convenient. It makes sense logistically — but feng shui sees it differently. Exercise equipment carries active, high-intensity energy that sits in direct opposition to the slow, quiet, restorative energy a bedroom needs to cultivate.

Beyond the energetic argument, there's something psychologically real here too: looking at your treadmill first thing in the morning or last thing at night keeps your mind in a doing mode rather than a resting one. If moving the equipment isn't an option, tuck it inside a wardrobe or behind a screen so it's not the first or last thing you see each day.

Wilting, spiky, or artificial plants

Plants bring life into a space — but in the bedroom, not all plants are created equal. Cacti and other sharp-leaved varieties are said in feng shui to introduce tension and harsh energy into a room, especially when placed close to the bed. The same goes for neglected or dying plants, which carry stagnant, draining energy rather than vitality.

Artificial plants fare no better. Decorative fakes might look tidy, but they represent lifeless energy — the opposite of what you want surrounding you while you sleep. If you want greenery in your bedroom, choose something with soft, rounded leaves, keep it healthy and well-watered, and place it away from the immediate sleep area.

Small changes, noticeable results

You don't need to gut your bedroom or overhaul your entire home to feel a difference. Sometimes all it takes is draping a cloth over your mirror before bed, or slipping your laptop into a drawer, for the room to feel noticeably calmer. The goal is to let your bedroom become what it was always meant to be — a quiet refuge where, at the end of the day, you can genuinely rest.

Does feng shui actually affect sleep quality?

Feng shui itself isn't a clinical practice, but many of its principles align closely with what sleep researchers already recommend — reducing visual clutter, keeping work out of the bedroom, and creating an environment that signals rest rather than activity. Whether you approach it spiritually or practically, the results tend to be the same.

Which plants are best for a feng shui bedroom?

According to feng shui, plants with soft, rounded leaves are ideal for the bedroom. The key rule is to avoid spiky or thorny varieties like cacti, and to never keep a plant that is wilting or neglected, as these are said to bring stagnant energy into the space.

What should I do if I can't remove my desk from the bedroom?

If a separate workspace isn't possible, feng shui suggests using a room divider or screen to visually separate the desk from the sleeping area. Covering your desk and devices with a cloth at night is a simple step that helps signal to your mind that the workday is over.

Why is a mirror facing the bed considered bad in feng shui?

Feng shui holds that mirrors amplify and circulate energy, which prevents the room from settling into the calm state needed for deep rest. Many people also find that catching their own reflection unexpectedly during the night is enough to wake them fully — making this one of the most practical feng shui rules to follow.
