There was a time when I was totally drawn into the skincare universe. Morning and evening routines, layering orders, acids, tonics, essences, ampoules. At one point, I was even taking notes on which ingredients shouldn’t be mixed and which to use on specific days. Theoretically, I loved it. But in practice, I quickly realized: a 20-step routine just isn’t sustainable for my life.
Not just time-wise, but financially too. And honestly, mentally as well. As a freelancer, I already keep enough systems in my head for work—I didn’t want to live by an Excel sheet in my bathroom too. Plus, skincare for me isn’t a hobby; it’s self-care—and when it gets too complicated, the joy fades.
So I ended up with a simple foundation: a good moisturizer, a reliable daytime sunscreen—and four serums that always line my shelf.
Not luxury brands or influencer hype, just simple, drugstore, affordable products. And they’ve worked really well for me.
Vitamin C
I use Vitamin C almost every morning. A few drops after cleansing, then moisturizer and sunscreen. That’s it. I love it because it visibly evens out my skin tone. It’s not magic—my face doesn’t look like I’ve applied a filter—but it gives a subtle, healthy glow. Like I look more rested than I actually am.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect against environmental damage and can fade pigmentation over time. For me, it’s mainly about that glow factor. And I love the feeling of doing something good for my skin first thing in the morning.

Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is my go-to reliable ingredient. Sometimes I use it daily, other times only when my skin feels tight or dehydrated. This serum instantly makes my face feel more comfortable. It’s not dramatic or flashy, but you can feel the difference. Hyaluronic acid locks in moisture, helping skin feel hydrated and plump—of course, only if you seal it in with a cream afterwards.
I appreciate it as a “safe” ingredient. No overthinking, no special schedule needed. When my skin’s thirsty, I give it a little extra hydration.
Retinol
I’m cautious with retinol. I use it two to three times a week at night, always making sure not to combine it with other strong ingredients. It was the only one of the four I was really wary of at first. I’d read so many horror stories about irritation, peeling, and “retinol purging” that I introduced it slowly and gradually. But it was worth it.
Retinol supports collagen production over time and can help improve fine lines and uneven skin texture. It’s not an overnight miracle, but a months-long journey. Maybe that’s why I like it: it teaches patience. There’s a grown-up discipline to it. I apply it at night, knowing its real effect shows up later.

Niacinamide
I use niacinamide every few days, depending on how my skin feels. If it’s a bit oily, has small red spots, or looks uneven, this is the serum I reach for. I call it my “organizer”. It helps regulate oil production, soothes the skin, and evens out the complexion over time. It’s not a flashy ingredient; it quietly does its job.
I love it because it’s reliable. It doesn’t irritate or cause drama; it just works quietly in the background.
I don’t have a 20-step routine, but I use my favorite serums every day or several times a week. I don’t layer five or six active ingredients or follow a weekly exfoliation schedule. But I have a system that fits my life—time-wise, budget-wise, and mentally.
