Feeling like your style is boring? Discover the 7-Point Dressing Rule — Fashion

Fashion often repeats itself in cycles. Trends and styles come back again and again, rarely bringing something truly revolutionary. Since I work in the fashion industry myself, real discoveries usually come from fresh brands or talented designers—everything else feels familiar. That’s why I was surprised when I recently came across a dressing theory I’d never heard of before. Keep reading to get to know the seven-point rule!

Some even call it the eight-point rule. The idea is that every piece in your wardrobe has a point value, and the perfect outfit totals seven or eight points—never less than six, but no more than ten. Basics like Levi’s jeans or a white blouse score one point. Bolder, statement accessories, like a patterned silk scarf or edgy earrings, count as two points.

Let’s see how this works in practice.

For example, if I wear ankle-length, slightly flared pants (1 point), a simple tank top (1 point), and ballet flats (1 point), I’m at three points. That’s fine, but a bit plain and underwhelming. Adding fishnet socks (1 point) and a suede blazer (1 point) brings me to five points. Then, topping it off with a floral headscarf (2 points) and sunglasses (1 point) comfortably hits eight points.

Of course, everyone has their own take. Some say that going over eight points makes an outfit too busy.

“It’s important to note that this rule doesn’t judge how good an outfit looks, but scores each piece to keep the overall vibe balanced—neither too flat nor too loud.”

– writes fashion blogger Stephanie Conklin.

The best part of this system is that you don’t have to stick to strict rules—it’s more of a playful guide. It helps you see your wardrobe with fresh eyes and spot which pieces really add character to your look. A small accessory worth an extra point can easily refresh your style without buying new clothes. Whether it’s a colorful bag or a standout belt, little details often make a bigger impact than you’d expect.

The 7-point rule also helps you make quicker decisions in the morning, since you can simply add up the points. This is a lifesaver when you don’t have time to sift through options but still want to look polished and stylish. Plus, scoring your outfit can turn getting dressed into a fun challenge that brightens your day. The more you try it, the easier it becomes to know when a simple combo is enough and when it’s time to add a little extra flair.

It’s unclear how long this little rule has been around or where it originated, but TikTok has definitely made it popular again among stylists and fashion lovers. Think of it as a tiny piece of wisdom, a bit like Coco Chanel’s famous advice to always take off one accessory before leaving the house.

In my opinion, the power of this rule lies in giving you a helpful anchor. If my outfit is very simple that day—say, a straight-cut dress—it reminds me to add more jewelry and accessories. But if I’ve already layered, like wearing a skirt over jeans with a graphic tee and bomber jacket, it reminds me not to overdo it with extra bracelets or hats.

Would I recommend dressing by the 7-point rule every single day? Not necessarily. But I have to admit, I keep thinking about it. Since discovering it, it pops into my head every time I get dressed, and I really like it. Next time you’re getting ready for work, give this method a try. Below, you’ll also find some one- and two-point pieces you can shop for inspiration.
