Decant only where it earns its keep. Batch-cooked grains, chopped vegetables prepared for the week and leftovers all benefit from flat, stackable containers with visible contents. Everything else can stay in its packaging — a fridge full of unlabelled matching boxes looks beautiful on the internet and generates a surprising amount of mystery food in real kitchens.
How often should I clean out my fridge?
A fifteen-minute reset once a week, ideally the evening before your main shop, is enough for most households: pull everything from the front, check dates, refill the eat-me-first box and wipe the shelves you can reach. Give it a proper empty-and-wash — shelves out, warm soapy water, dry before refilling — roughly every couple of months, or immediately after any spill involving raw meat.
Where should eggs go in the fridge?
It depends on how they were sold to you: if you bought them chilled, keep them chilled, and if they were sold at room temperature you can store them either way, but do not keep moving them between the two. Wherever you keep them, avoid the door — the temperature swings there are the largest in the whole fridge, and eggs are happier in the stable middle, ideally in their box, which protects them from absorbing other smells.
Make it survive a bad week
Any system that requires a calm Sunday will collapse by October. Keep yours to three rules you can follow while tired: coldest shelf for raw, eat-me-first box at eye level, nothing hidden behind anything. Do that, and the fridge starts answering the seven-o'clock question for you.
