Have you ever felt like "I can’t just step outside like this"? Like there’s some invisible expectation you have to meet? You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way.
Sometimes, standing in front of the mirror in the morning, I find myself reaching for my makeup—not because I want to add a little mascara, but because I feel I have to. Because somehow, it just doesn’t feel right to walk out the door without it. A bit of foundation, some eyeshadow, a touch of "making a good impression," a dash of social expectation. And honestly, that can feel really exhausting.
The Illusion of Perfection
Today, editing photos takes just a few clicks. Filters, retouching, and even AI-generated images shape what we consider beautiful. But remember, this digitally crafted reality is a distorted mirror reflecting what we perceive as "expectations"—often far removed from everyday life.
Still, this false perfection often becomes the standard. It’s no wonder more and more people feel they always have to look their best. Because if not, comments come—often meant to be harmless but can actually sting:
– "You look tired, is everything okay?"
– "You seem different today, are you feeling unwell?"
– "You look so nice like this, why don’t you wear makeup more often?"
Almost all of us have heard comments like these, which only reinforce the idea that if we’re not "put together," something must be wrong.
It’s Not the Makeup, It’s the "Have To"
I don’t think the problem lies with pretty clothes, makeup, or perfumes. I often enjoy dressing up, trying a new eyeshadow, or simply spending a little extra time deciding how I want to step outside. But when it’s not for our own joy, but to meet external expectations—that’s when it stops being self-expression and starts feeling like pressure.
The trouble begins when we no longer choose how we want to look, but the outside world decides for us.
Beauty Isn’t Dependent on Makeup
Unless we’re heading somewhere that calls for dressing up (like the theater), we’re totally fine in comfy sweatpants, with freshly washed—but not styled—hair, and no makeup at all.
Beauty isn’t just about appearances; it’s about how well we feel—physically, emotionally, and mentally. It’s the energy we radiate and how true we are to ourselves.
Maybe you’re not wearing perfume today, or you didn’t follow the latest trends. That doesn’t automatically mean you "didn’t care"—it might just mean you chose comfort, and that’s perfectly okay.
Let’s Return to Ourselves
Facing this pressure every day isn’t easy. But we can start reclaiming the feeling when our inner needs—not outside expectations—shape how we show up in the world.
Don’t apologize for going to work without makeup. Don’t feel less worthy on days when you don’t see yourself as "pretty"—that doesn’t define your value. And above all, don’t say things to others that you wouldn’t want to hear yourself.
It Can Be Easier Together
I believe that if more of us start thinking differently, let go of the illusion of perfection, and encourage each other—and ourselves—that we’re enough just as we are, we can begin living in a calmer, more honest world.
Because beauty isn’t a goal to reach. Beauty lives within us—even when we’re just running to the store in sweatpants.
