There’s something magical about exploring the world with an old friend, even if it’s right in your own city.
One of my college friends and I decided to meet in the city where I now live. Think of it as a meetup from opposite ends of the country: she’s from Szeged, I’m from Szombathely, so we usually met in Budapest. This time, we rediscovered the city in my own little world.
Even the excitement of planning was special: what should I show her that I usually overlook? Which spots shine brightest in spring?
Rediscovering the Familiar
Szombathely, though a county seat, isn’t usually a top tourist spot except for the August Savaria Carnival. For me, this time it became a true journey of discovery. The city where I lived for nearly 20 years and recently returned to revealed itself differently: through the eyes of an “outsider” to whom I wanted to show my favorite places.
This experience reminded me how much perspective changes when we see familiar streets, parks, and squares through someone else’s eyes. I noticed little things I’d taken for granted before: sunlight sparkling on the roads, the scent of a blooming tree in the air, the peaceful calm around the churches.

Calm and Little Details in the Arboretum
Our first stop was the local arboretum, a place I hadn’t visited in years. Spring flowers, fresh green leaves, and quiet paths set the perfect scene for our conversations.
As we walked, we paused to admire every little detail: a particularly beautiful flower cluster, the shimmering reflection on the pond, or the birdsong.
We took photos, laughed, and simply enjoyed having nowhere to rush. Those few peaceful hours reminded me how important it is to slow down, notice the small things, and appreciate the beauty that often slips by in daily life.
Coffee, Sunshine, and a Late Lunch
Leaving the arboretum, we stopped at a sunlit café, where we continued chatting over a matcha latte.
It wasn’t just the conversation—the warmth of the sun, the smell of freshly baked pastries, and the little moments of city life around us made the moment special.
Then came a late lunch, where local flavors and slowly savored dishes perfectly wrapped up the day. These simple yet special moments completed the experience and reminded me how many little joys await us even in busy weekdays.

The City Revealed with New Eyes
This day wasn’t just about friendship, but also about rediscovering the familiar. The city I live in showed a different face: full of tiny wonders that had been hidden in the rush of everyday life.
The walk, the laughter, the sunshine, and paying attention to the little details taught me again how important it is to slow down, be present, and appreciate the world around us.
Small Details, Big Experiences
Since then, I’ve been even more mindful as I walk through my city. Every street, park, café, or shop hides a little wonder—you just have to notice it.
The day with my friend reminded me that sometimes the greatest joys come from the smallest moments when we slow down, pay attention, and simply enjoy the present moment.

And maybe this is what truly makes our time in the city—and in life—valuable: the little details we often overlook.
