Geraniums are some of the most rewarding plants you can grow on a balcony or in a garden — but keeping them in full bloom from June through August takes more than just regular watering. If your geraniums are looking a little tired, there's one surprisingly simple fix that experienced gardeners swear by: Epsom salt.

It's natural, inexpensive, and packed with exactly what your plants need to thrive through the hottest months of the year.

Why Epsom salt works so well for geraniums

Epsom salt is essentially magnesium sulphate — and those two minerals do something remarkable for plants. Magnesium plays a central role in photosynthesis, helping leaves absorb light and convert it into energy. Sulphur, meanwhile, supports the production of proteins and enzymes that keep the plant strong and healthy.

Together, they boost the plant's ability to absorb nutrients from the soil, resulting in richer foliage and more abundant, longer-lasting flowers. For geraniums in particular — which are heavy bloomers and can quickly deplete the soil — this kind of mineral top-up makes a visible difference.

How to use Epsom salt on your geraniums

The method is refreshingly straightforward. Simply dissolve one tablespoon of Epsom salt in one litre of water and use this solution to water your geraniums once a week.

Make sure to water directly at the base of the plant so the solution reaches the roots — that's where it does the most good.

If you're working with larger window boxes or planters, scale up the amount proportionally. For best results, use collected rainwater rather than tap water — rainwater is free of chlorine and other chemicals that can interfere with nutrient uptake.

Other habits that keep geraniums blooming longer

Epsom salt is a powerful tool, but it works best as part of a broader care routine. One of the most effective things you can do is deadhead spent flowers regularly — removing faded blooms as soon as they wilt encourages the plant to produce new buds rather than putting energy into seeds that will never develop.

Sunlight matters too. Geraniums love a sunny spot, but in the peak heat of summer, a little afternoon shade can prevent leaf scorch and keep the plant looking its best. A bright spot that gets some shelter from the harshest midday sun is often ideal.

The case for natural plant care

One of the best things about Epsom salt is what it isn't — it's not a synthetic fertiliser loaded with heavy metals or chemicals that accumulate in the soil over time. It's a natural, eco-friendly option that's gentle on the environment and safe to use season after season.

It's also widely available at pharmacies and garden centres, and costs very little. For the results it delivers, it's one of the best-value gardening tips around.

Healthy, full-blooming geraniums all summer long aren't a matter of luck — they're the result of small, consistent acts of care. And sometimes, the most effective ingredient is the simplest one.
