Imagine finally lying down after a long, exhausting day. The house is quiet, your blanket is warm, and you feel ready to relax. Before falling asleep, you nibble on a little treat: a piece of chocolate, a slice of cheese, or a small cup of yogurt. Surely it can’t hurt, you think.
Then, in the middle of the night, you wake up from strange, unsettling dreams—or even a vivid nightmare. Maybe stress isn’t the culprit this time… it could be your evening snacking. A recent study explored whether foods influence not only sleep quality but also dream content. The findings are more surprising than you might expect.
Researchers Made an Important Discovery
A study published in the Frontiers in Psychology journal analyzed responses from over a thousand college students. Between January and April 2023, 1082 participants completed online surveys rating more than a dozen food groups—from dairy and desserts to fruits and meats.
Here’s one of the most striking results:
- 40.2% felt certain eating habits affected their sleep,
- 25% believed at least one food group worsened their sleep quality,
- and 20% reported that some foods actually improved their nighttime rest – according to CBS News.
Which Foods Most Often Disrupted Sleep?
Three main “culprits” stood out based on participants’ feedback:
- Sweets and desserts,
- spicy, heavily seasoned dishes,
- dairy products—including milk, yogurt, and cheeses.
On the flip side, many credited fruits, herbal teas, and vegetables with promoting calmer, more restful sleep.

Can Foods Even Influence Our Dreams?
Interestingly, 5.5% of participants noticed a link between certain foods and their dream content. They didn’t just sleep worse—they experienced more vivid, restless, or even frightening dreams.
Food groups most often tied to nightmares:
- Desserts and sweets: 31%,
- Dairy products: 22%.
The researchers urge caution, noting that current data isn’t enough to confirm foods directly cause nightmares. As they wrote: “While there’s no solid proof yet that these participant observations about food and dreaming are entirely accurate, there’s some indication they might be.”
So, there’s a chance foods do influence our dreams—but more thorough studies are needed to be sure.
The Link Between Dairy and Nightmares

One of the most intriguing conclusions is that disturbed dreams linked to dairy might have a very tangible, physical cause: lactose intolerance and the digestive issues it triggers.
The researchers explain: “This analysis supports the idea that food-triggered symptoms during sleep—like bloating, cramps, or excessive gas—negatively impact dreaming.”
In other words: if your body struggles with dairy, nighttime digestive troubles might not only wake you up but also make your dreams more restless.
The authors also point out that the participants were psychology students, which means their prior knowledge might have influenced how they interpreted or reported the effects of certain foods. This doesn’t invalidate the results but highlights the need for broader research.
Tips for More Restful Nights
If you want to avoid tossing and turning or strange dreams, try these simple tips:
- Listen to your body! Keep a mini sleep diary and note which foods seem to disrupt your rest or cause unusual dreams.
- Avoid problem foods at night—especially dairy, sweets, and spicy dishes.
- Keep dinner light—an overloaded digestive system can interfere with both sleep and dreams.
Treats or Nightmare Triggers?
You don’t have to banish your favorites forever. It’s all about balance—and paying attention to how your body reacts. Maybe a cheesy evening snack causes no trouble at all… but if restless, disturbing dreams keep coming back, it might be worth skipping it for a few nights. The key to better sleep could be right in your fridge.
