The quickest way to get fuller lips is still to book an appointment with your dermatologist for lip fillers. But if you want a budget-friendly, less invasive—and temporary—option, lip-plumping glosses are worth considering. Here’s how to visually enhance your lips with these glosses.
If you’ve ever tried a tingling, lip-plumping product, you might wonder: is regular use safe? To clear this up, Byrdie asked two dermatologists: Dr. Elaine F. Kung and Dr. Debra Jaliman. Keep reading to find out what the experts say about lip-plumping glosses.
What’s Inside Lip-Plumping Glosses?
Lip-plumping glosses are designed to temporarily make lips look fuller and plumper. They usually contain ingredients that create a mild tingling or cooling sensation on the lips. This feeling can cause blood vessels to expand, leading to temporary swelling and a fuller look.
Some lip-plumping glosses—especially older formulas—include spicy extracts like cinnamon, menthol, or even chili pepper (capsaicin). Others may contain bee venom, which can also cause lip swelling.
“Applying irritants boosts blood flow to the skin’s surface, causing mild, short-lived lip swelling,” explains Dr. Kung.

Can Lip-Plumping Gloss Be Harmful?
The experts say the answer depends on the ingredients.
“Lip-plumping glosses are generally safe unless you’re allergic to one of their ingredients,” says Dr. Jaliman.
Products with spicy extracts aren’t dangerous on their own, but it’s best not to overuse them. “Frequent use can cause irritating rashes around the lips,” warns Dr. Kung. She adds, “The tingling, minty, or spicy feeling doesn’t mean these glosses actually add volume. These sensations can easily trick us into thinking they work.”
Dr. Kung suggests lip plumpers with caffeine or niacin as good alternatives since they dilate blood vessels without the sting. However, there’s limited scientific research on the lip-plumping effects of topical caffeine and niacin.
Both experts agree the safest ingredients for daily use—even during pregnancy—include:
- hyaluronic acid
- peptides
- collagen
- vitamin E
- natural oils like coconut oil, shea butter, and castor oil

How Long Does the Effect Last?
Lip-plumping glosses usually last for a few hours. The duration depends on the product and individual reactions. Some formulas offer a more noticeable and longer-lasting effect than others.
Alternatives to Lip-Plumping Gloss
A longer-lasting alternative is hyaluronic acid lip fillers like Restylane, Juvederm, Versa, or RHA. Their effects typically last several months before needing a touch-up.
“The downside is the procedure can be painful, and swelling or bruising may last a few days,” says Dr. Kung. Lip filler results usually last 3–12 months.
A gentler option is using lip scrubs, balms, and masks with natural ingredients like sugar, honey, or coconut oil.
“Look for ingredients like peptides—which support collagen production—hyaluronic acid, and shea butter,” adds Dr. Jaliman. Proper hydration alone can make lips look fuller and more youthful.
The good news is most lip-plumping glosses are safe. Still, like with any cosmetic, checking ingredients and doing a patch test is key.
If you notice any irritation, redness, or itching, stop using the product immediately—no matter what the packaging promises!
