The wellness revolution has officially moved outdoors. A yoga mat in the living room and an essential oil diffuser on the nightstand are no longer enough — the real upgrade is happening in the garden. After outdoor saunas and cold plunge tubs, there's a new must-have that's quietly taking over backyards this summer: the spool. If you haven't heard of it yet, here's why it might be the smartest garden investment you'll make this year.

What exactly is a spool?

The word "spool" is a blend of "spa" and "pool" — and that's exactly what it is: a hybrid sitting right between a jacuzzi and a full-size swimming pool. Sometimes called a cocktail pool, it typically measures around 4 to 4.5 metres in length, compared to a standard jacuzzi at roughly 2.5 metres and a traditional pool at 6 metres or more.

That middle-ground size is the whole point. It's compact enough to fit in a modest garden, yet spacious enough to actually swim, float, and relax in. Most models work year-round too — cool it down in summer for a refreshing dip, or heat it up in winter as a post-sauna soak. One installation, every season covered.

Why people are replacing their big pools

A traditional pool has its appeal, but more and more homeowners are realising that the cost, the space it demands, and the upkeep far outweigh the actual enjoyment they get from it. The spool offers a smarter, more modern answer to all of those frustrations.

It fits where a full pool simply won't

Gardens in newer homes are getting smaller, and a 6–8 metre pool can swallow an entire backyard whole. A spool, on the other hand, delivers a genuine luxury feel while leaving room for a terrace, outdoor furniture, and maybe even a little greenery on the side.

Far less maintenance

The smaller the water surface, the less work it takes to keep clean. No more spending every weekend wrestling with chemicals, and winterising the whole thing isn't the major project it is with a full-size pool. For anyone who'd rather spend their free time actually relaxing than maintaining, that alone is a game-changer.

Lower running costs

A smaller body of water heats up faster, uses fewer chemicals, and puts noticeably less pressure on your energy bills. A spool can run all year round without causing utility bill shock — something that definitely can't be said for a large pool.

Genuinely versatile

Hydrotherapy, summer cooling, winter warm-water relaxation — the spool stays relevant in every season, not just the three warm months when a traditional pool earns its keep.

One thing worth knowing before you buy

The spool itself is only part of the investment. Installing one changes the level of your garden, may require drainage work, and will almost certainly mean rethinking the surrounding area — whether that's decking, planting, or paving. It's well worth consulting a landscape designer or pool specialist not just for the installation, but for planning the whole garden around it.

Most spools are custom-built on site, but a growing range of modular, pre-designed models is now available — these tend to be quicker and more affordable to install.

Who is the spool actually for?

Honestly? Almost anyone who wants something special in their garden without sacrificing the whole plot or their weekends to upkeep. It's a particularly good fit for smaller gardens, busy families, and anyone who wants to bring their wellness routine home.

If your garden is on the smaller side but you don't want to give up on water relaxation, the spool is a perfect compromise. And if you have a large garden but simply don't want the burden of maintaining a massive pool, it works just as well — install it in one corner and keep the rest as lawn or terrace.

Families with young children love it too: it's much easier to keep an eye on kids in a smaller water space, and the maintenance won't eat into your weekend. It's equally ideal for a quieter, retired lifestyle — low running costs, but a genuine daily wellness experience right outside your door.

If you've ever dreamed of having your own little home spa but the price or sheer scale of a traditional pool put you off, the spool is exactly the solution you've been waiting for. You don't have to choose between a jacuzzi and a pool — this is both at once.
