1/4. Szálkai Lake

Located near Szekszárd in Tolna County, Szálkai Lake is a perfect spot for both fishing and beach lovers. Created in the late 1970s by damming the Lajvér stream, it has become the main attraction of the nearby village Szálka, welcoming visitors every summer with a developed beach and regular events.

Spanning about 15 square kilometers, the lake’s deepest point is 2 meters (6.5 feet). You’ll find both sandy and pebbly shores, plus options for pedal boats, rowboats, and kayak rentals. The beach also offers a playground and a volleyball court. Szálka hosts cozy guesthouses and inns, and camping is available too.

2/4. Lakvölgyi Lake

In the heart of the Bükk Mountains, 20 kilometers from Eger, lies Lakvölgyi Lake on the edge of the picturesque village Bélapátfalva, beneath the Bél-kő peaks. Locals call it the Gyári Lake since it was originally created to supply water to a nearby cement factory. Today, it’s a favorite spot for anglers and those seeking peace, with a hidden path leading there from town, so you won’t find crowds.

A charming little restaurant on the shore welcomes hungry visitors, while the surrounding forested, hilly landscape invites hikers. If you visit, don’t miss nearby Szilvásvárad, famous for the Szálajka Valley and its Veil Waterfall. The area is full of natural wonders, and you can even follow the Blue Trail.

3/4. Vadása Lake

If you’re heading to the Őrség region, stop by Vadása Lake near Hegyhátszentjakab for a refreshing swim in this charming little lake.

Created by locals in the late 1960s using the Vadása stream, this 200-meter-wide, 350-meter-long lake is well maintained and offers fishing opportunities. It’s a fantastic getaway for friends and families alike. The rolling hills around the lake feature several exciting hiking trails, and camping and guesthouses are available for visitors.

4/4. Szelidi Lake

Hungary’s fifth largest lake, Szelidi Lake, might not be as famous as Lake Balaton or Velence, but it’s an ideal spot for both beachgoers and those seeking relaxation. Located 17 kilometers from Kalocsa in Bács-Kiskun County, its paid southern beach—known locally as the Big Beach—features an 800-meter (about 2,625 feet) sandy shore perfect for families with small children. The water gently deepens, and a superb playground with swings, slides, and climbing frames awaits the little ones.

The lake also has several smaller free beaches, and you can swim at the ends of streets in the resort area. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy their passion in the lake’s coves and along the northern shore. During summer, the area buzzes with lively nightlife, and on Saturday evenings, the Szittyó Square near the main entrance hosts a street party for those ready to celebrate.
