Discover a Japanese Hair-Washing Technique That Boosts Hair Growth — Hair
In this article

When it comes to beauty care, the Japanese always seem to be one step ahead. Just think about it: while we might brush our hair once a day (if we remember), in Japan, they do it at least twice—and for good reason. Hair care there is almost a ritual, focusing not just on the hair itself but on the scalp.

A key rule in the Japanese hair-washing ritual is that everything starts with a scalp massage. Hairdressers use two small silicone brushes—one in each hand—and gently work the scalp in circular motions, moving upward from the nape. This deeply cleanses the roots and stimulates blood circulation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles, which supports long-term hair growth.

The shampoo used during the massage not only removes impurities but also eases tension—so next time you’re feeling stressed, try a few minutes of scalp massage in the shower for a calming boost.

In Japan, applying oil before washing is a must. A few drops of oil on the scalp balance moisture and help keep hair cleaner for longer. It’s no surprise oils have been a beauty secret for decades—geishas, for example, used camellia oil to keep their hair shiny and silky.

After washing, the Japanese don’t rub their hair dry. Instead, they gently blot moisture with a microfiber towel or a soft cotton T-shirt. Only then do they comb their hair, preventing breakage and unnecessary tension. Hair dryers are used sparingly to minimize heat exposure, keeping hair truly shiny and healthy.

So next time you wash your hair, give this Japanese-inspired routine a try:

  • massage your scalp with a silicone brush,
  • treat your scalp with a few drops of oil beforehand,
  • and gently dry your hair with a microfiber towel.
