Got curly hair? These mistakes can damage your curls if you’re not careful
Curly hair is beautiful and full of character, but it’s often delicate too. Without proper care, curls can quickly become frizzy, shapeless, or tangled. Zoltán Hegedűs, master hairstylist and founder of BubblyPro, reveals the most common slip-ups and how to avoid them both at home and in the salon.

Too Little or Too Much – The Double Challenge of Curly Hair
Many think curly hair will just take care of itself, while others overload their hair with products hoping to perfect their curls.
“Because of its texture, curly hair needs extra care even between washes. For example, never comb it dry—that instantly ruins the curl shape and causes frizz. It’s just as important to handle wet hair gently and avoid rubbing it hard with a towel, since wet strands are much more fragile,” warns Zoltán Hegedűs.

The Secrets Behind Frizz
Frizz often comes from curly hair drying out, and physical damage only makes curls worse.
“Frizz is a common companion to curly hair. Curls dry out quickly, and physical stress easily disrupts their beautiful shape. Using the right leave-in products and natural oils can really help calm the frizz,” explains the expert.
What Products Does Curly Hair Love?
Not all curly hair is the same, so it’s smart to watch ingredients when choosing products:
“You can’t apply the same product list to every curly hair type. But one thing all curls need is natural oils. It’s key to avoid silicones and petroleum derivatives because curls need real nourishment. That’s why our brand offers sulfate-, silicone-, and paraben-free products designed to support curly hair care.”

Washing and Drying – Small Mistakes, Big Impact
Without the right washing and drying routine, curls can lose their shape fast:
“Avoid these four habits: using water that’s too hot and rubbing hair harshly, drying hair on high heat settings, air-drying which often leads to shapeless curls, and conditioners with silicone that block curl formation,” advises Zoltán Hegedűs.

Diffuser for Perfect Curl Shape
Using a diffuser helps keep curls defined, but mistakes happen often:
“Patience is key. Never use the hairdryer on high heat—it causes frizz and curls are most vulnerable to heat damage. While drying, handle curls gently: don’t rub or toss them around. That’s how you get a gorgeous style.”

Cutting Tips
Layered cuts and natural transitions highlight curls, while poor techniques can weigh them down:
“Layers and transitions beautifully showcase waves and curls, adding movement and volume. In contrast, blunt cuts make hair heavy and restrict curl formation. I strongly advise against thinning scissors—they leave short cut strands poking out, creating a frizzy look.”
Refreshing Next-Day Curls
Beautiful curls don’t always hold their shape overnight:
“Physical damage is the main culprit. A satin pillowcase or satin-lined bonnet helps minimize overnight frizz. For a quick refresh, a leave-in moisturizing spray plus gently pressing curls back into shape works wonders. On day three or four, dampening and restyling can revive your curls.”

If You’re New to Mindful Hair Care
“Patience is key, and sometimes less is more. You don’t need a ton of products. A good shampoo, silicone-free conditioner or mask, a styling product, a natural oil, and a leave-in spray are all you need. Curly hair thrives with simplicity,” Zoltán Hegedűs advises.
