What Is Double Shampooing?

Double shampooing means washing your hair twice in a row during one shower. The first wash loosens sweat, oil, dirt, and product buildup, while the second focuses on truly cleansing your hair and letting nourishing treatments penetrate deeper.

The first wash does the dirty work, and the second reaches deeper into the scalp, resulting in a super clean shampoo experience,” explains dermatologist Anna Chacon. “This can really benefit scalp health. And as we all know, a healthy scalp is linked to healthy hair.”

The shampoo routine stays the same each time: wet your hair, apply shampoo, massage your scalp with your fingertips, then rinse. The only difference is you repeat this process.

2. Who Benefits Most from Double Shampooing?

Double shampooing is especially helpful for those with thick or wavy hair, oily scalps, or who wash their hair less than two to three times a week. It’s also great for anyone using lots of styling products who needs that extra wash to thoroughly remove residue.

I usually recommend double shampooing when clients use many styling products because hair and scalp can get clogged with chemicals and oils, making styling harder,” says renowned hairstylist Julia North.

I also suggest it for those who wash their hair infrequently or naturally have oily hair. If you’re a swimmer, it’s important to thoroughly remove chlorine too.”

3. Who Should Skip Double Shampooing?

If your hair feels fine with just one wash or you wash it daily, you probably don’t need to double shampoo. Overwashing can disrupt your natural oils, causing dryness, irritation, or sometimes excess oil production.

I don’t recommend double shampooing for those with very dry or damaged hair. Curly hair can break easily from dryness, so I specifically advise my curly-haired clients to avoid it,” North says.

People with colored hair, especially vibrant shades, may also notice color fading if they shampoo twice.”

4. Why Give It a Try?

Double shampooing cleanses your hair more thoroughly from buildup, helping it feel fresher and cleaner over time. Plus, a well-cleansed scalp supports better hair follicle function, which can lead to healthier, fuller hair in the long run.

5. Pay Attention to Your Hair Type

Double shampooing isn’t for everyone. If you have a sensitive scalp, fine hair, or prefer gentle, natural products, sticking to a single wash helps avoid over-drying your hair.

Overall, the best approach is to listen to your hair’s needs and adjust your routine accordingly. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. If your hair and scalp feel clean after one wash, that’s probably enough. But if you still notice product, oil, or dirt, another wash won’t hurt.
