There’s Something in Your Bathroom Dirtier Than Your Toilet — Household
In this article

Chances are, you don’t—simply because you had no idea it was the dirtiest spot. When we think of less hygienic areas in a bathroom, we usually picture the sink, shower, drains, and of course, the toilet if it’s in the room. But since we know these spots can get dirty, we tend to clean them more carefully. That’s why an unexpected area has earned the title of the "dirtiest place in the bathroom."

A UK study found that the dirtiest spots, in terms of bacteria and grime, were the bathroom radiator or towel rack

How is that possible?

Damp towels create the perfect breeding ground for harmful microbes and bacteria, which thrive even faster thanks to the warmth. And towels pick up plenty of bacteria—along with skin flakes, hair, and all kinds of other dirt.

We make this worse by not cleaning towel racks often enough. Wiping and disinfecting them can feel like a hassle, and many don’t realize how dirty these surfaces can get. But researchers say it’s worth the effort—towel racks can collect dust, grime, mold, and fungi. These can cause illnesses, skin irritations, and other skin problems if the racks aren’t cleaned thoroughly and regularly.

Color-changing wipes reveal the dirt

To show just how dirty these spots get, researchers used color-changing wipes to test five different bathrooms. They found that 60% of towel racks and radiators fell into the "really dirty" category, with another 10% labeled simply "dirty."

This means 70% of radiators and towel racks failed to meet hygiene standards.

By comparison, only 10% of the tested toilets were classified as "really dirty."

The study also pointed out that drains are another potential hotspot, with 50% found to be "really dirty"—something many homeowners might have guessed.

What’s the solution?

Regular disinfection is key. Also, swap towels often and make sure they can dry thoroughly and quickly. Lightweight, quick-drying towels work best, and avoid overcrowding the drying area to keep things fresh and clean.
