I enjoy being in the kitchen most of the year, but my approach changes a lot in summer. On long, warm days, I prefer to spend less time baking and cooking, so I usually save the more time-intensive recipes for fall. I opt for quick, fresh, and preferably cold dishes. Having these 5 essentials in my summer shopping cart makes all the difference.
Fresh, Seasonal Vegetables and Fruits

Buying seasonal produce isn’t just a mindful choice—it’s a fun summer activity. A stroll through the market or local farmer’s stands isn’t just shopping for me; it’s a source of inspiration. Tomatoes really taste like heaven right now, peppers are crisp, and cucumbers refresh better than any lemonade.
When I buy these, I can whip up a tasty salad in minutes. A drizzle of olive oil, a pinch of salt, and a squeeze of lemon make it delicious on its own, or a perfect side for grilled meats and fish.
I never forget the fruits either—fresh raspberries, blackberries, or peaches go into my yogurt for breakfast, or straight as a snack, even frozen for smoothies. Watermelon also regularly finds its way into my cart.
Canned Tuna

There’s one canned good that’s always in my cart year-round and comes with me on trips: canned tuna. A good-quality tuna (in olive oil or its own juice) is way more versatile than you might think.
Mixed into a salad, it turns into a complete meal in minutes. Tossed with pasta, a bit of capers, and lemon, it brings a Mediterranean vibe to the table. And when I’m really short on time, I love it spooned onto toast with fresh veggies.
Yogurt

Yogurt is a summer staple for me—creamy, smooth, nourishing, and refreshingly cold! It’s great on its own but becomes a favorite breakfast with fruit, nuts, and granola. When I crave something savory, I turn it into tzatziki with garlic and cucumber to brighten up pita or tortillas. It works as a meat substitute, sauce, or even a base for frozen treats.
As someone sensitive to dairy, I usually choose unsweetened plant-based fruit yogurts or plain coconut yogurt. But if you can enjoy dairy, plain Greek yogurt is a fantastic summer “base” ingredient.
Tortilla or Pita

Summer is all about quick meals—but that doesn’t mean fast food burgers, fries, or pizza. A quality pita or tortilla comes together fast, offers a totally different flavor experience, and can be much more nourishing.
Even with gluten sensitivity, I find tortillas in many stores, which is a lifesaver when I don’t have time or energy to make my own. I usually stuff them with plenty of veggies, tuna, or chicken breast, drizzle with yogurt dressing, roll it up, and I’m good to go! We always bake our pita at home, but I’ve seen great gluten-free options in stores too.
Nuts and Seeds

Last but not least, I’ve discovered in recent years how much a handful of crunchy walnuts, almonds, or pumpkin seeds can elevate a simple dish. They add texture and flavor to salads, creamy soups, or even pita, plus they pack a nutritional punch.
Sprinkle a handful into your yogurt or enjoy them alongside fresh fruit for an easy energy boost. Nuts and seeds store well and make perfect snacks.
My Time Left Over Means Everything
As much as I love cooking, summer kitchen time is less about precision for me. I still focus on mostly nourishing meals, but fancy plating and extra touches take a backseat.
With these staples, I can whip up a variety of delicious dishes in 15 minutes or less—without standing sweaty by the stove. Instead of spending hours cooking, I spend more time outdoors, exploring new places or revisiting my favorite beaches and hiking spots.
My shopping cart changes a bit in summer, but these five essentials are always there. Knowing I have them means I can eat well, quickly, and simply.
