Have you ever wondered what messages you’re unknowingly sending your child about how you see your own body? The passage of time and a hectic lifestyle have left their marks on me, affecting my confidence. This summer, I made a commitment to love my body, not only for myself but also for my daughter.

Body positivity is a movement that celebrates satisfaction and love for our bodies, no matter their shape, size, age, or any other feature. This mindset is especially valuable for those who don’t fit the idealized images often seen in the media and want to find peace within themselves.

Embracing and practicing body positivity brings many benefits—not just for our self-esteem but also for family relationships. Kids easily pick up and adopt the values and attitudes their parents express and model through their behavior.

Body Positivity in Action: Summer as a Challenge and Opportunity

The hot summer months often push us to show more skin than we might feel comfortable with, especially if we’re not fully happy with our bodies. But summer also offers a great chance to practice body positivity and reshape how we see ourselves.

What we wear isn’t just a personal choice—it sends a message to those around us.

Many think body positivity is just a trendy slogan to pull out when it suits our mood. In reality, it’s ongoing work, even during relaxing summer vacations. Beyond our clothes, our habits around our bodies truly matter. How do we look in the mirror? What thoughts do we attach to our reflection?

I never say things like, “I won’t eat more because I’ll gain weight,” or “Look at my saggy butt!” Instead, I show that food is joy and the body is wonderful just as it is.

I don’t complain about my belly in front of the mirror, I don’t obsess over little rolls, and I never criticize fashion models or plus-size people on TV.

Instead, I dress with a smile, enjoy moving my body, and honor when it needs rest. This way, my daughter learns that her body isn’t something to criticize but a companion worthy of love and respect.

Leading by Example as a Parent

My daughter is just beginning to shape her identity and self-image, so it’s especially important she sees positive examples around her. Every day offers a new chance to learn and grow, and her mind is open like a sponge.

That’s why I want to share the message of body positivity and self-love in the right way, aiming for her to be gentler with her body than our generation often has been.

Leading by example isn’t just about feeling good in our bodies—it’s about showing how to get there. It’s vital for my daughter to see how diverse beauty can be and that there are many paths to self-fulfillment. Confidence and self-love are the greatest gifts we can give her.

The Impact of Media and Society

Our body image is shaped not only by family but also by the wider society. The ideals promoted by media are often unrealistic and distorted, deeply affecting self-esteem. Children can sense this impact, sometimes even more sensitively than we expect. That’s why it’s crucial for the family to be a safe space where different values can be shared and nurtured.

Teaching body positivity often means showing that media images don’t fully reflect reality. It’s helpful to talk about how these idealized images are created and why it’s important not to judge others—or ourselves—based on them.

Body positivity and self-love are lifelong goals that require daily practice. When we accept that we deserve love just as we are, life becomes easier in every way—especially when we pass that love on to our children. There’s no perfect body or lifestyle, but what matters is embracing our limits and celebrating our strengths.
