Imagine a peaceful village where beneath the dusty ground hides a secret more than 200 million years old. A creature that once walked along ancient riverbanks hunting fish — now coming back to life, at least in the minds of scientists.

The BBC recently reported a stunning find in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, western India: the fossilized remains of a rare, crocodile-like ancient reptile called a phytosaur. This fossil has excited not only scientists but also cast new light on the area as a key site in Earth’s ancient history.

What Exactly Is a Phytosaur?

The phytosaur was a unique semi-aquatic reptile that lived along riverbanks and in shallow waters. Its long, crocodile-like body might confuse many with today’s crocodiles, but it actually came from a completely different, earlier branch of evolution.

“The phytosaur was a semi-aquatic animal, living both in rivers and on land. Modern crocodiles later evolved from creatures like these,” said Dr. C. P. Rajendran, a geoscientist.

The creature was estimated to be about 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 6.5 feet) long and over 200 million years old.

The Discovery Site: Secrets of Megha

The fossil was found in Megha village, in the desert region of Jaisalmer, where locals were digging a small pond. During the excavation, they noticed strange, skeleton-like shapes in the soil and wisely alerted the authorities.

Dr. Narayandas Inkhiya, lead hydrogeologist of the water authority and head of the research team, believes the site could be a real treasure trove:

“There could be many more hidden fossils here, offering vital and fascinating insights into the story of evolution. This could also open doors for fossil tourism,” Dr. Inkhiya told the BBC.

A Fossilized Egg Was Also Found?

Alongside the phytosaur remains, researchers identified a special find: a fossilized egg shape that might belong to the reptile. If confirmed, this would make the discovery even more significant.

“The fossil shows a medium-sized phytosaur that likely lived on a riverbank here millions of years ago, feeding on fish to survive,” explained Dr. V. S. Parihar, the lead paleontologist, to NDTV.

Why Jaisalmer?

While this discovery is globally important, experts say it’s no surprise such a rare fossil was found here. The region belongs to the Lathi Formation, a geological site famous for hosting dinosaurs and other ancient creatures during the Jurassic period.

“On one side of the area flowed a river, and on the other, a sea during the Jurassic era. It’s no wonder so many fossils are hidden here,” added Dr. Rajendran.

This isn’t the first remarkable find in the region. In 2023, Dr. Inkhiya discovered a fossilized egg likely from a dinosaur. In 2018, researchers from the Geological Survey of India uncovered the oldest herbivorous dinosaur remains here.

A Message from Deep Within the Earth

This discovery not only inspires the scientific community but also expands the boundaries of our imagination. As a multi-million-year-old skeleton emerges from the sand, it reminds us that the world is full of hidden stories waiting to be noticed.

Sometimes, a lakeside walk, a chance movement, or a curious glance can bring a piece of the past to light. And even if we don’t always see it, history surrounds us, ready to tell its story again.
