When you finally slip under your soft duvet at night, you’re probably not thinking about how long it’s been since it last saw the washing machine. That fresh-smelling bedding, warm blanket, and comfy pillow create a cozy, safe space where you can truly unwind. But what if we told you that this peaceful spot actually hosts more invisible guests resting with you?
Your bedding touches you for hours every day—and everything you bring to bed with you. Sweat, skin flakes, dust mites, pet hair, maybe a coffee stain or yesterday’s crumbs: some of these quietly cling to your duvet. So the real question isn’t whether to wash it, but how often. Cleaning pros are here to guide you.
Why Does This Matter So Much?

Clean bedding isn’t just about feeling good. “Regular washing of your duvet and bedding creates a healthier, more sleep-friendly environment,” says Jessica Ruenz, Vice President at Maid Right, in Southern Living.
She points out key factors to consider:
- how oily your skin is,
- whether you get into bed clean,
- how much you tend to sweat at night,
- and what other dirt your bedding might be exposed to.
All these affect how often you should wash your duvet.
Your Daily Habits Shape How Often You Wash
Many think their duvet hardly gets dirty, but the truth is more nuanced. Experts highlight how your routine can influence washing frequency.
Sara San Angelo, professional cleaner and founder of Confessions of a Cleaning Lady, asks key questions to gauge your bedding’s “load”: “Do you sweat at night, eat in bed, or do your kids snack on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches there?” She also stresses whether your duvet touches your skin directly or if you use a top sheet.
Another big factor is if your pet sleeps with you. If yes, your duvet gets dirty faster and needs more frequent washing.

How Often Should You Wash Your Duvet?
Good news: you don’t need to wash your duvet every week. Ruenz emphasizes that since the duvet usually doesn’t touch skin directly, washing every 2-3 months is enough.
What about duvets with covers? Frequency depends on how you use them: “A duvet with a cover protects the top blanket or duvet, but if you use a top sheet between the cover and the duvet, you can stretch the time between washes,” explains Ruenz. “Washing intervals can range from 1 to 3 months.”
San Angelo adds that if your duvet or covered duvet is mostly decorative and taken off the bed at night, it needs washing very rarely—maybe just twice a year. The cover, of course, should be cleaned more often.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Washing Your Duvet
Washing a duvet seems simple, but there are important rules to follow.
- Always check the label
Different materials need different temperatures and care.
“Usually, use the highest water temperature indicated on the label and choose a gentle detergent,” Ruenz advises. - Don’t overload your washing machine
Duvets soak up a lot of water and get very heavy.
“Duvets and bedding become extremely heavy during washing and can damage smaller machines,” warns San Angelo.

Many modern machines have a special “bedding” setting—definitely use it.
Clean duvets aren’t just more hygienic—they’re cozier and can help you enjoy healthier sleep. By tuning into your habits and following expert tips, you can easily create the perfect washing routine for you.
