With a little care, you’ll save time and get your plates and utensils sparkling clean! Better Homes & Gardens recently shared some handy tips that will help your dishwasher do its best job.

The Basics

  1. Know your machine! Most dishwashers work similarly, but details vary by model. Read the manual to learn where the water jets are, the operating temperature, and which detergent suits your machine best.
  2. Only load dishwasher-safe items! Always scrape off food scraps first and soak stubborn stains. Remember, not every dish can handle the dishwasher. Hand wash antique porcelain, wooden utensils, non-stick cookware, and aluminum, cast iron, or copper items to keep them safe and intact.
  3. Load in an organized way! The dishwasher’s heating element and water jets work together to get your dishes spotless. Avoid overcrowding. Since jets spray upward, place items so their dirty sides face down and tilt slightly toward the center. Don’t face dishes toward the walls—they won’t get cleaned. Put larger pots and bowls at the back or sides of the lower rack, and fill gaps with smaller plates.

Where to Put What?

  • Glasses and plastic containers: In the top rack, upside down.
  • Kitchen tools: Long spatulas and spoons along the edge of the top rack.
  • Cutlery: All in the basket, knives handle-up for safety. Mix forks and spoons to prevent them from sticking together.
  • Larger pots and pans: In the bottom rack, at the back and sides, so water flows freely.

Where to Place Heavily Soiled Dishes

Put heavily soiled items on the bottom rack where water pressure and cleaning power are stronger.

  • Use the right detergent! Always choose a dishwasher-specific detergent that matches your machine and soil level. Powder, pods, or liquid? Your manual will guide you. Never use hand dish soap—it can damage your dishwasher!
  • Unload from bottom to top! It’s tempting to start with the top rack, but unloading from the bottom up prevents water droplets from the top rack dripping onto clean dishes below.
  • Keep safety in mind! Always place knives handle-up to avoid injuries. Don’t overcrowd glasses, especially delicate ones—they can crack or break easily. After the cycle, wait a few minutes before opening the dishwasher to avoid hot steam burns.

Extra Tips for Spotless Dishwashing

  • Make sure nothing blocks the water jets.
  • Don’t overload the dishwasher—every dish needs enough water and detergent.
  • Run a cleaning cycle with a dishwasher cleaner once a month.
  • Clean the filter regularly.
  • Occasionally run an empty cycle with a cup of vinegar (like apple cider or white vinegar) to remove buildup and odors.
  • If your water is hard, use a water softener.

With these simple tips, dishwashing almost takes care of itself, and you get to enjoy that brilliant shine.
