Tailbone

My sister’s only symptom was severe tailbone pain. Her husband bought her a new chair, mattress, exercise ball chair, and gel cushions to make sitting more comfortable, but nothing helped. Then one evening during dinner, she had a seizure, and an MRI revealed advanced lung cancer. Doctors gave her six months, but after two years of intensive treatment, she walked out of the hospital on her own. The craziest part? She’s been symptom-free for nine years and hasn’t needed any check-ups since.

Thirst

Constant thirst and frequent urination? I ignored it because women tend to drink a lot and go often. But these were clear signs of type 1 diabetes.

Stomach Pain

My dad complained for months about stomach pain. We didn’t think it was serious and eventually argued with him to see a doctor because his constant whining was exhausting. The diagnosis: metastatic basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. Miss you, Dad.

What Your Stomach Tells You

After turning 50, I suddenly had constant stomach issues. It hurt whether I was hungry or full—it felt like ongoing indigestion. I tried anti-bloating and acid reducers, but nothing worked. At the doctor’s, my pulse was 40, extremely low. After months of tests, I fainted during a treadmill test and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, meaning my heart can’t pump enough blood to my organs—and my stomach was the first to signal trouble. Now I live with a pacemaker and take a bunch of medications.

Constipation

I’ve never been the type to have daily bowel movements, so I didn’t think much of constipation at first. Then I developed hemorrhoids but still didn’t see a doctor—until my mom nagged me daily. The diagnosis: rectal cancer. If she hadn’t pushed me, I might not be here today.

Missed Period

At first, I wasn’t bothered by a missed period—after all, no one enjoys menstruating. But after months without it, and with no illness, weight loss, pregnancy, or menopause to explain it, I finally saw my gynecologist after a full year. It turned out I had a brain tumor. When they told me, I thought I misheard. The doctor explained that unless you’re pregnant or in menopause, a missed period always signals a serious issue.

Chest

My 36-year-old husband had chest pain for months but said he’d see a doctor after our vacation. In the fall, the family doctor said it was probably just stress and to rest. A few weeks later, he went to the public clinic, but they found nothing. Finally, a private clinic diagnosed stage 4 bile duct cancer. He passed away two months later.

Aching Tooth

For months, I suffered what I thought was a cold. I had headaches, fatigue, and an aching tooth—or rather, my entire lower jaw hurt—but the dentist found nothing. After many tests, I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in my throat. I’ve never smoked or drank. I was lucky—I’ve been cancer- and symptom-free for seven years.

Shoulder

My shoulder hurt and felt numb, but I thought it was just bad posture from sitting at the office all day. The company doctor didn’t take it seriously either—when I mentioned it, he said I probably just slept wrong. It turned out I have Guillain-Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disease causing nerve inflammation, symmetrical limb weakness, and numbness.

Back Pain

I’m a 35-year-old man who had back pain that wasn’t unbearable and was manageable with painkillers. I waited months for it to go away but finally saw a doctor when it became persistent. They told me I have stage 4 cancer that spread to my bones, liver, and brain. I’m now in terminal care, which means I won’t be here much longer. Don’t wait months—if something hurts, see a doctor immediately.
