Forget the crowded resort pools. A growing number of travelers are building their entire holiday around one simple pleasure: swimming in the sea. And a new international study has revealed exactly where in the world you can do it best — with warm, clear, inviting water that doesn't disappear after August.

The results might surprise you. Some of the world's most famous beach destinations didn't even make the list.

What makes the perfect ocean swimming destination?

London-based travel agency CV Villas analyzed more than 100 coastal destinations worldwide, looking beyond just pretty photos. The research factored in water temperature, wind conditions, cloud cover, and UV levels to create a "Swimmable Seas Score" — a measure of how consistently ideal each location is for open-water swimming throughout the year.

The benchmark was clear: water temperatures between 26 and 30°C, the range recommended by the WHO as genuinely comfortable for swimming. At those temperatures, the sea stops being a challenge and starts being a pleasure.

The world's number one spot for ocean swimming

Topping the global ranking is Gili Trawangan, a tiny island off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. It's famous for its white sand beaches and lush tropical scenery — but what sets it apart is water so clear it's often described as "gin-clear," with visibility stretching deep below the surface.

What makes Gili Trawangan truly special is its pace. The island is completely car-free, which means no noise, no exhaust fumes, and a sense of calm that's genuinely rare. Its shallow, sheltered lagoons offer safe, exotic swimming conditions that are hard to find anywhere else on earth.

Nearby Gili Air and Gili Meno share many of the same qualities, making the Gili Islands as a whole one of the most compelling swim destinations on the planet.

Egypt's Red Sea: warm, stable, and endlessly clear

High up in the rankings are two Egyptian favorites: Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada. Both have long been beloved by divers and snorkelers, and for good reason — the Red Sea offers some of the most stable, consistently warm water anywhere in the world.

Seasonal temperature swings here are minimal, which means ocean swimming isn't just a summer activity. It's a year-round experience. The proximity of coral reefs also keeps the water exceptionally clear and teeming with marine life, adding a visual dimension that pools simply can't compete with.

Surprising gaps: where are the US and the Caribbean?

One of the study's most striking findings is what didn't make the list. Not a single US coastal destination appeared in the top rankings — largely due to significant seasonal temperature variation along American coastlines.

The Caribbean, often seen as the gold standard of beach travel, was also notably underrepresented. Only two destinations made the cut: Negril in Jamaica and Cockburn Town in the Turks and Caicos. Even postcard-perfect regions, it turns out, don't always deliver consistently ideal swimming conditions across the full year.

Why islands dominate the rankings

More than half of the top 15 destinations are islands or island-style locations — and the reason makes intuitive sense. Coral reefs, sheltered lagoons, and natural bays create more stable water conditions, buffering against strong waves and sudden temperature shifts.

The Mediterranean also performs well in the study, with Cyprus and Turkey standing out for their warm climates and protected coves that offer excellent swimming well into autumn.

Ocean swimming is becoming the new luxury travel

There's a broader shift happening in how people think about travel. More and more, the goal isn't a packed itinerary or a famous landmark — it's a feeling. Rest, nature, and experiences that genuinely restore you.

Swimming in the sea ticks all of those boxes at once: it's physical, meditative, and visually breathtaking in a way that almost nothing else is.

The data makes the conclusion clear. If you want warm, clean, calm ocean water for as much of the year as possible, Indonesia's tropical islands and the Red Sea coastline offer the most reliable experience on earth. Gili Trawangan, in particular, is hard to argue with.
