Can you only fall asleep if one foot peeks out from under the blanket? Here’s the science behind it.
There’s a nighttime move that almost always works when it comes to falling asleep—and it works for nearly everyone. It’s not about white noise or a sleepy cocktail, but something much simpler: sticking your foot out from under the blanket.
You’ll find tons of posts about this on social media, with many people saying it’s the only way they can drift off. This small habit can actually have some pretty interesting effects.
It’s totally natural to enjoy a few toes feeling the cool night air, especially if you’re struggling to fall asleep. It’s like hitting the reset button on your body, helping you slip into dreamland faster.
Why Do We Stick Our Feet Out While Sleeping?
It feels good to stick your feet out from under a warm, heavy blanket (even if your head and arms are already in the cool air) because your feet actually act like built-in thermostats.
“There are special blood vessels near the skin surface on the feet (called arteriovenous anastomoses), which help the body efficiently release heat,” explains Dr. Leah Kaylor, psychologist and sleep expert. “There aren’t as many of these on the arms, so the feet do the job faster.”
Often, it’s just about comfort. “Some people instinctively stick their feet out for comfort or temperature reasons, since cool air alone can help with falling asleep. Others do it to ease restless leg sensations or to avoid overheating.” So it’s completely understandable to want to stick your feet out, and Kaylor says this could be part of your body’s natural sleep process.

The Science Behind the Trick
Many sleep experts recommend taking a warm shower before bed to help you fall asleep faster. “Your body temperature naturally drops as you fall asleep,” Kaylor explains, “so the sudden cool air after warm water is ideal for sleep.”
Sticking your foot out works in a similar way. “It helps your body release heat quickly, signaling your brain that it’s time to rest,” she says. “This trick aligns perfectly with sleep science: your core body temperature needs to drop about 1–2 degrees to fall asleep. So, by sticking your foot out from under the blanket, you create better sleep conditions for yourself.
Resting with your foot out not only helps you fall asleep but can also improve sleep quality. “A slight cooling of the body can promote deeper, more stable sleep and reduce nighttime awakenings,” Kaylor adds. “This mimics the brain’s natural sleep-wake cycle: as core temperature drops, melatonin levels rise.”
So next time you’re tossing and turning, try sticking your feet out from under the blanket—or even fully uncovering them. “It’s a simple, safe way to cool your body and naturally signal that it’s time to sleep,” the expert recommends.
