Study Reveals: Tinted Sunscreen or Clear SPF — Which Is Better? — Face

Dermatologists agree there’s no one-size-fits-all answer — the key is using sunscreen consistently. “We’re just happy if someone applies any sunscreen daily,” says Dr. Corey L. Hartman, founder and medical director of Skin Wellness Dermatology, a view shared by dermatologist Dr. Elyse Love. That said, tinted options can be especially helpful for certain skin concerns.

Tinted and clear sunscreens both protect against UV rays, but tinted formulas add pigments. These pigments shield not only from UV but also from visible light, which is especially important for deeper skin tones. Visible light can trigger or worsen pigmentation spots.

Simply put, tinted sunscreen acts like a shield on your skin’s surface, reflecting and scattering visible light—including blue light. This matters because blue light can stimulate pigment cells, leading to issues like melasma or other dark spots. So if you’re prone to pigmentation from sun spots, acne scars, or melasma, tinted sunscreen could be your new best friend.

A 2022 study found that tinted sunscreen can be an effective way to manage and reduce melasma. Finding the right shade is key. While brands used to offer only one or two “universal” shades that didn’t suit everyone, today many provide a wide range to match every skin tone.

What’s Inside Your Sunscreen Matters Too

Besides tint, the ingredients matter. If you’re acne-prone or have clogged pores, opt for non-comedogenic, oil-free formulas. Many mineral sunscreens contain oils that can clog pores and cause breakouts, so check the ingredient list carefully. It’s a bonus if your sunscreen includes hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid for extra moisture and a comfortable feel.

Always choose at least SPF 30 with broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. A handy rule is to apply two finger-lengths for your face, or three for face and neck. If coverage feels too heavy, try a sheer tinted sunscreen. And remember to apply at least 15 minutes before sun exposure for full protection.
