The Cleveland Clinic says wearing socks helps regulate your body temperature, which is key for a calm, restful night’s sleep. So, sleeping in socks can definitely be a good call. But it really matters when and how clean those socks are before you slip them on for the night.
A British mattress company once surveyed 1,130 Reddit users, and only 30% said they put on clean socks before bed. The rest stuck with “the ones I wore during the day will do.” That’s probably not the best idea.
Forget About Wearing Used Socks to Bed!
Researchers examined eight pairs of socks worn all day and the results were shocking. These samples had 20 times more bacteria than an average toilet seat and were even dirtier than a TV remote control.
The socks were contaminated with dust mites, fungi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa—a bacteria that, in rare cases, can infect skin, blood, and lungs.
And that’s not all. Two of the eight pairs also showed traces of fecal bacteria. At first, you might think the wearer walked barefoot from the bathroom to bed, but researchers suspect these bacteria likely came from cockroach droppings, which can easily transfer to bedding.

Always Keep Hygiene in Mind
The good news? Sleeping in socks can still be a great habit—just with a little extra care and hygiene. Here are some simple tips to keep things fresh and comfy:
- Put on a fresh, clean pair of socks before bed if you want warm feet.
- Wear slippers at home to protect your socks (and feet) from floor bacteria.
- Don’t forget to wash your bedding regularly—because even the cutest clean sleeping socks won’t help if your sheets are full of bacteria.
No need to banish your favorite sleeping socks from the bedroom—especially if they help you unwind after a long summer day. Truly restful sleep is priceless, especially in warm, busy seasons.
But if you’re going to sleep in socks, do yourself a favor: wear a clean pair each night and use slippers indoors to keep bacteria out of your bed. A little attention goes a long way toward making your nights more comfortable and hygienic!
What About Pajamas?
Keep in mind that pajamas can also become a “risk factor” if worn too long without changing. Dermatologists say pajamas can absorb sweat, dead skin cells, and even bacteria within just a few nights—especially in warmer months.
Their advice? It’s best to switch to fresh pajamas every 2–3 wears, even if you only wore them for a few hours.
