Growing Your Own Lavender? Here’s How to Make Oil and Candles from It — Hobby

Lavender gardening is becoming a favorite hobby, and it’s easy to see why. This fragrant plant not only beautifies your garden but also serves as a versatile ingredient at home. Beyond its charm, lavender offers many uses, from making oils to crafting candles. Here’s how to create your own lavender oil and candles to fully enjoy the gifts of your garden.

Lavender thrives best in sunny spots since it loves warm, bright climates. Make sure your soil drains well because lavender roots can rot in soggy ground. Nutrient-rich, slightly alkaline soil creates the perfect home for your plants.

When planting lavender, space the plants about 30-40 cm (12-16 inches) apart to give them room to grow, though this can vary by variety. With regular watering and occasional pruning, you’ll enjoy a bountiful bloom.

How to Make Homemade Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is one of the most popular and versatile products you can make from your homegrown lavender. It’s simple to prepare and fills your space with a wonderful scent.

  1. Start by picking fresh lavender flowers, ideally in the morning when their essential oils are most concentrated.
  2. You don’t need special equipment—just a jar or mason jar and a neutral carrier oil like sweet almond or extra virgin olive oil. Feel free to experiment with lighter oils such as jojoba, grapeseed, fractionated coconut, or apricot kernel oil.
  3. Place the fresh lavender flowers into the jar, then pour enough carrier oil to fully cover them.
  4. Seal the jar and place it on a sunny windowsill for two to three weeks. This allows the fragrant compounds to infuse into the oil.
  5. Shake the jar occasionally to mix the oil evenly. When ready, strain the oil and store it in a dark glass bottle.

Pouring Lavender Candles

Lavender candles aren’t just pretty—they bring a calming scent that soothes both body and mind. You’ll need wax, essential oil, a wick, and a slow-burning heatproof container lined with fabric. Choose beeswax or soy wax depending on whether you want a natural or vegan candle.

  1. Melt the wax gently over a double boiler, keeping the temperature moderate. Then add 10-15 drops of your homemade lavender oil.
  2. Secure the wick in the container, pour in the wax carefully, and let it solidify.
  3. Once fully set, shape your candle and enjoy the relaxing lavender vibe it brings to your home.
  4. For a stunning look, try adding design touches like colored wax or decorating the surface with dried lavender flowers.
  5. Adjust the scent strength by varying the amount of lavender oil to suit your personal preference.

Lavender’s vibrant color and rich aroma make crafting creative decorations a joy. Don’t hesitate to experiment with shapes and hues. Homemade lavender products are not only sustainable but also customizable, adding a unique touch to your creations.
