"My husband received love letters" – 10 shocking stories revealed after someone’s death

After our divorce, I saw my daughter on weekends. Only after her mother’s sudden death did I learn that my ex-wife had physically and emotionally abused our child. It took months after the funeral for her to finally tell me. Since then, my daughter has been seeing a psychologist. I hate myself for not noticing—I had no idea and thought my ex was a good mom.

My best friend died in a car accident, and while packing up her things at her apartment, I found a folder on her laptop I hadn’t seen before. Inside were homemade videos with all our mutual guy friends—eight different encounters with eight different guys. She was always a shy, reserved girl. I deleted the folder and never told the guys, but since then, I can’t see them as just friends anymore.

I had struggled my whole life to manage the household and cooking on a tight budget because "we didn’t have money." I’m still furious and can’t grieve properly—only anger fills me.

I served in Afghanistan with a guy who sadly died in a raid. While gathering his belongings, I found a thick, worn notebook filled with information and stories about our team. It included personal secrets, childhood traumas, and bad memories shared during guard duty or downtime. One of my childhood traumas was detailed with dates. I was very young when my father died. I remember strange men at his funeral arriving in expensive, huge cars. They stood silently at the back and left without a word. As a teenager, I asked my mother about it, and she told me my dad had been involved in organized crime his whole life. When he was "working in South America," he was actually in prison. The mysterious suited men at the funeral were his mafia associates.

My grandfather died in the 1990s, and we found it odd that there were no childhood photos of him, although there were many of his siblings. We asked my aunt, who tearfully shared that they had a younger brother who died at four. During the war, my great-grandparents saved my grandfather, a Jewish boy, from a train bound for Auschwitz. They raised him as their own son under the name of their deceased child. The secret stayed hidden for fifty years.

A friend of mine was HIV positive and died in his thirties due to complications. We knew about his illness but not how or from whom he contracted it. His brother told me after the funeral that as a teenager, my friend was drugged and sexually assaulted at a party. He confided only in his brother, who promised to keep it secret. It was years later that it became clear the assault led to his HIV. This explained much about his life and personality. I regret not knowing so I could have helped him process it.
